My Clue 2 squares measure 9 1/2 inches. The fact that so many seasoned crocheters are having gauge problems indicates a lack of pattern testing on Bernat's part. I can't believe such a reputable company would put out an apparently untested pattern under their banner. I am extremely disappointed with the issues this week. Love the pattern and had no problem figuring it out. But I currently have a really bad taste in my mouth concerning Bernat products because of the problems with the testing and design of this CAL. I will hang in for one more week, still using my trusty H hook. If the next clue is problematic, I will frog my progress so far, and go to a more reliable source for my patterns and yarn needs. Thanks for letting me vent, but this is ridiculous!

I hear you... I've been crocheting for more than 40 years as well... I've never had to change tension or hook size on only part of a crochet project, so all these issues this week have been concerning to me as well... I was kind of wondering if WE are the pattern testing? ;)

1. I didn't like the puffy look I was getting in the center, so in rounds 2 and 4, I chained 6 instead of 5.
2. I don't like weaving in ends, and prefer to "work smart, not hard," so I did NOT fasten off at the end of round 3 and rejoin the same color at the beginning of round 4; rather, I just slip stitched over to the 3rd dc of the previous round (5th stitch total) and followed the round 4 directions from there.
All done!!

I slipped it as well and mine are turning out fine. Looks like many of us have chosen to slip up stitches instead of fastening off.

I worked up my motif and was so excited how it turned out...Until I measured it at only 9 inches!
So, I ripped out all the stitches and went to get the next bigger hook AND I DON'T HAVE IT!!!
Going to bed to dream about my CAL :(

Oh no! :(
I hope you find your larger hook tomorrow.

I did! :cloud9: And I looked at it constantly while I was at work dreaming of coming home to start on the new clue!

I am getting so crazy about this stuff, that I bought the yarn to do the KAL also - It's going to be a gift for my son :D

I seem to be having the same sizing issues as a lot of other people. I had to go from the recommended H hook to a K hook to even get gauge on my swatch. My Clue 1 squirkles are about 1/4" off so no biggie. My finished Clue 2 octagon...9 inches...same hook....same yarn...same grip on the hook and hold on the yarn  . My question is what gives????? This many people having the same problem seems a bit hinky to me.

what is this??? why all those negatives posts, I'm telling you just stick with it, you'll see everything will come as it suppose to. It is a mystery Cal after all. The word is mystery. This is not my first cal and my afghan came out looking awsome eventhough some of my squares did not match the perfect measurement. So.................

We understand that it's supposed to be a mystery. What's a bit bothersome is that we're supposed to be getting one measurement and we're getting something way off. We haven't switched hooks or yarn or our technique since last week when everything worked the way it was supposed to (at least for me). Since this is the CAL forum we (at least I) were under the impression that this was the place to post about our problems and concerns so that they could be discussed and possibly remedied. Maybe I was wrong and should just keep my thoughts, comments, ideas, etc. to myself. :idonno:

Thank you for your positive words. I was beginning to wonder if I am the one in the wrong. This is exactly why I never worry about gauge, especially when making a blanket. It always comes together in the end.

I truly love working with this yarn. I love the feel of it in my hands. I started Clue #2 after a very long day at work, taking my mom to church, going to dinner with my hubby ... I started wondering if I would ever get home to crochet :hrmm: I finally did, and I completed 2 motifs. I LOVE THIS ONE!!!!! Such a change from what I have been making. I love the octagonal shape. I can't wait to see how they all come together.

Going to go finish the last 4 this evening.

I so love the puffy look. It adds texture to the piece. I love the variation. I thought about slip stitching, but I crochet my loose ends in rather than weaving. It works for me.

I usually don't do many posts to forums, but I feel I need to comment here.
I think this is a beautiful pattern for Clue 2. :bravo: I love the way the center flower on mine is 3-D looking. To make mine to size I have used a I hook.
But if my results were too small I think I would just add another row or two instead of frogging.
