Crochet-Along Clue 2

I don't mind the pattern, but i'm kinda curious as to the look of the whole afghan. Is anyone planning to keep this for themselves or are people giving it away as a gift?

I am not sure yet, I think it will depend when i finish it and honestly what it looks like when i'm done. I dunno!

All I can say is this clue is driving me nuts I had no problem with clue 1, I keep getting lost on round 6, start that round, rip it out, do it again and again and I know it's not that hard, I've crochet for years, I just keep getting lost. I think I need to blow up the instructions to extra large for reading.

Since I am making 3 (2 CAL and one KAL) I figure I will have to give away two of them for Christmas time, may let my daughters decide which ones they prefer or I just end up making the choice myself. I may end up loving one too much to give away! Or working too hard on one to want to never give it up. or maybe the girls won't want it or the boys may want it instead then I would have to make 3 more for my sons ... decisions decisions

PS: I did not ever plan to make 3, I paid full price for my first set from Mary Maxim, came home and a couple weeks later Michael's had it on clearance ($2.50) so I picked up another set, ended up getting one colour wrong, so bought another set in a different family of the wrong colour and fixed the second set. Very long story short, 3 sets of Waverly here so I HAVE to make all the mystery afghans! Don't want the yarn to go to waste!

I tend to give things away even when i decide i'll keep it... so i don't know where this one will go.

You have to make three if you have the perfect yarn for it! besides, who doesn't love a beautiful afghan!?

OK, I selected three different brands of yarn for my afghan so I was thinking I might have gauge problem, but did clue #1 using some of all three brands with an H hook and they were nearly identical. I tried I hook and working loosely for clue2 following the pattern and it just looked very messy and sloppy though it did measure 11 ". I tried what stitchychic suggested chaining six instead of the pattern's 5 chains on rounds 2 and 4. I also started with magic circle and the inside diameter was one inch, larger than using the chain 6 method as suggested, that I tried with larger hook. I did this with the H hook and it looks much, much neater than big loose stitches. It is exactly 11" without having to tug and pull and stretch and block and flatten bunched up petals. I will probably use the dark purple one I already made with I hook, but the beige one I am definitely ripping out (again!) and redoing with extra chains, and magic circle. It does match up with the clue one's sides, but I don't know if they will even join together.
I guess if you are having problems with it being too small using these suggestions, you could also try triple crochet or extended double crochet on round 7 without messing up the looks of the pattern. I cannot imagine that they would design this thing where the flowers are supposed to look bunchy looking. If they wanted 3 D flowers, they could've used the 3D flower like they had in CAL 2010, that was very pretty. Someone else suggested not to put in so many stitches in the chain spaces for the petals, that might help too if you are still having problems with them bunching up, thought they all seemed to fit fine in chain 6 space.
There is something to be said about having to learn to modify patterns if they are not working, but I think there are so many people just learning to crochet trying to have fun doing this CAL, that this should have been better tested. It should be fun for those have been crocheting for a while too!

I just ripped out round 5 since round 6 wasn't working out, now round 5 doesn't make sense. When I read the pattern and match it to the diagram well lets just say I'm pulling my hair out. I'm thinking this is to tough for me, maybe I work better with patterns that say at end of round/row you will have x amount of stitches or something. Can anyone tell me how many double crochet are in each chain 5 space? Even after asking this question I don't even know where to go to find the answer if anyone does apply. I'm hopeless

bpn, there should be 4 DC in each chain 5 space.
Maybe this is easier? Let's say a V stitch is ( DC, ch1,DC). So in each chain 5 space you will do one V stitch, chain 2,
one V stitch, ch 1. (There are two chains in between the two V stitches in each chain 5 space, and one chain between the two chain 5 spaces that you are working the V stitches into.)
