Clue #2 is definitely more challenging, takes more time and patience. Just a suggestion for the directions: it would clarify the intended results and inspire more confidence if Bernat indicates the number of loops or stitches that should be made in a given round. For example: "8 loops made," "11 dc on each side between the dc-ch2-dc corners." As a lifetime crocheter, I figured it out, but this would make it less confusing to follow the pattern.

I'm pretty new at crocheting and had a questions. In round 1, should I be going through the hole, yarn over and do my sc or is should I be going through the stitches as if I were doing an increase?

stitches are all to go into the hole, and cause a ring when you are done. You can do it!!!

I have done 3 blocks so far and they all came out to the correct size. I am using an H hook, which I also used for Clue 1. Glad this worked out. I am moving very slowly on the KAL (still not done with clue 1 blocks), so it's nice that I didnt' have to redo these one. :inlove:

Just a couple of things I did that may help...

On Row 5 I found it easiest to use stitch markers in the ch 2 spaces.

On Row 6 I found that I had to be careful when stitching in the ch 2 spaces--I would lose track of where I was and put the second stitch in the wrong space.

My finished piece before blocking only measures 9.5 inches, but will lie very nicely when it is blocked without having a "stretched" look to it. The side measurements of unblocked clue #1 matches unblocked clue #2.

As a side note the whole "frogging" discussion has kept my family entertained. Now when I have to frog something it is done with the sounds of "Rip it! Rip it! Rip it!" in the background!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have definitely learned alot in this very new crochet adventure and for those who are having difficulties, hang in there!!

My Clue 1 squirkles are about 1/4" off so no biggie. My finished Clue 2 octagon...9 inches...same hook....same yarn...same grip on the hook and hold on the yarn  . My question is what gives????? This many people having the same problem seems a bit hinky to me.

When I've looked at some of the photos in the spoiler thread, I've noticed that some people do their chains very tightly. I'm thinking that this might be drawing in the size of the motif. Is this something you might be experiencing in your motif?

If I crochet any looser it's going to look sloppy. Right now I'm using a size K hook and I think it's a bit sloppy looking so I'm not really liking the thought of having to switch hooks back and forth between clues. It's a beautiful pattern and I really like the way it looks. I also am pretty sure that blocking won't even correct a 2 inch difference without really stretching and making it look distorted. At this point I'm not sure what to do...either use an even bigger hook and risk a sloppy look or just go with what I've got with a hook that's already 3 times bigger than recommended or what.

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to crochet looser, but it doesn't look at nice with super big stiches compared to my clue 1 which blocked out to the correct size. I'm going to go with it and finish, but I am going to wait to start my second one until I see how this turns out. Definitely bummed about the sizing problems. You should NOT have to switch hooks in the middle of a project! And the gauge should always be the same; even having to crochet looser on one part of the blanket is bothersome.

I think what we all need to keep in mind is that these are OUR afghans. If one afghan works up smaller or larger than the "official", so what. That is what makes them special. I am working up two at one time and some yarn colors are thicker than others. I think one will end up being smaller than the other, but that's ok. They will each have their own "identity" and I think that's pretty cool!

I decided to add a round of dc's and it came to a perfect 11". This is just what I decided to do. To each their own :)
