When I was learning to crochet, I was taught to hold the hook like a butter knife. I had no idea until now that you could hold it like a pencil. I should try that and see if it's comfortable.

I use hooks with the more rounded top and shallow hook. I find the Susan Bates' style ones with the pointier top and deeper hook a bit more awkward. I've always wanted to try a wood or bamboo hook but, with a perfectly good set of hooks at home, I haven't been able to justify buying extra hooks :|

I’ve been crocheting a TON more lately than I ever have before, and I’m starting to get a cramp in my right hand. Do you think one of the ergonomic hooks would relieve that? I hold the hook like a knife (sort of) and all the hooks I have are the ones they sell at walmart. I’d love to gift myself with some quality supplies, so I’d love to hear other hook reviews. :D

The bamboo handled hooks help me a tone along with the gloves. The flat hooks feel weird to me

I had to stop crocheting when I used the normal sized hooks, because they caused so much pain for me.

Now, I only use hooks with an ergonomic grip, and have no more pain or problems. :)

I have the Provo Craft ergonomic set, but had trouble putting the hooks together. I wish they had hooks that clicked in instead of having to screw them in place. And I don't really like the way the metal hooks in that set work with yarn.

I really like the Clover Soft Touch hooks. They are so comfortable in my hand, and the yarn flows easily on them.

But, my favorite is the Clover Crochet Lite hooks, with the plastic hook that lights up. The hook is delicate, so it forces me to loosen my grip. I don't want to break the hook! And the lighted tip is so handy. It really helps me see where to do my stitching.

I haven't tried the Eleggant Hooks yet. They look like they would be comfortable to use, with that egg-shaped grip.

I LOVE my Clover hooks. But I did not use them for the CAL because I didn't know if there were going to be any treble stitches in pattern, I have a tedious time doing longer stitches with those hooks. But they are very comfortable.
Also it looks like Bernat sells some spongy things you can put on hook handle. They look like they would help. I tried something similar on steel hooks that you use for #10 crochet thread and they were wonderful.

Darn I wish Joann's shipped to Canada. 25% off!!!

I think I'll try a clover hook. Looks like it's got great reviews.

Thank you!

I have 2 aluminium hooks, a steel hook and a plastic one. I love the aluminiums for being firm and light weighted but the quality isnt that awsome. I found that in the hook it isnt all smooth, so with the thinner yarn it tends to stick there... any simple sollutions?

Gosh, I don't know of a solution. I do know one thing, though. I never throw away a hook. Different yarns need different hooks. So, I hold onto all of them. I have a big variety of hooks, so I can try out different hooks with any yarn I buy.

There was a question, how do you hold your hook, like knife, or pencil? Hmmm, never gave it a thought. So today am working on a project that has long rows of boring HDC and after some thought, figured I usually hold like knife. Now as index finger is all cramped up I thought I would try holding it like a pencil. My goodness! I took me several more long rows of HDC to just even feel comfortable with that, but going fine now. But if anyone wants a good laugh, try holding the hook the other way than the one you usually work.

I use any old hook, though I do like the clover ones. Actually my CAL hook has a metal snag on the end but at least I know that is the one I am using for this project. There are cats and dogs and yarn and hooks and patterns everywhere and though I am getting smart enough to write down the hook I was using on a pattern that is sized,
I know the snagged hook is the CAL one! Maybe the snag will have worn off by the time I finish.

Has anyone tried the Addi Swing Hooks yet?
I am considering buying a set since I am crocheting so much lately and need something more comfortable. But they are so expensive and Michael's doesn't sell them so I cannot use a coupon! lol I thought about only buying 1 Addi Swing Hook but I use different ones than is called for in my patterns so I never know what size I would end up needing.

I do have the purple Provo Craft set, I love the feel of the handle, I just hate how the yarn 'sticks' on the hook. It is not smooth. I tried using a scrapbook trick and rubbing wax paper on the hook. If only the hook was smoother I am sure that set would be the only one I would be using. If you have a tip on how to improve the shaft then please let me in on it!

Otherwise for now I stick with my Clover hooks like I said earlier in this thread.
