Handicrafter Cotton - Bath Mat

Postby Shichemell » Tue Feb 21, 2012 5:44 pm

I need a bit of help with this pattern.

The corners of the bath mat end up being a series of chain 8’s - row after row. The instructions say, "Pull ch-8 loops as follows: from 6th rnd through 5th rnd, from 7th rnd through 6th rnd, from 8th rnd through 7th rnd. Rep in same manner for all ch-8 loops of rem rnds as shown in picture." The picture is of poor quality and tiny to boot, so it was of no help at all. :rainy: I googled these instructions, and someone suggested these were instructions for jacob’s ladder crochet. Can anyone weigh in with their opinion, and maybe clearer instructions on how to accomplish this? TIA!!!

I think the video dixiemiss posted is just what you needed, the only difference being that those chain 8s are making another kind of mitered corner, so you have to add some extra stitches around where you pull it through at the last row so that the corners lay flat. It looks like interesting pattern, it is too bad the photo is so tiny, you almost have to read the pattern to imagine what it will look like.

Thank you everybody. :D

I’m not great, yet, at being able to imagine what the finished project will look like just by reading the instructions. I will post pictures of my mat when I’m done.

Thanks again!! :notworthy:

Well I know you will have to resize it to post it, but I am hoping it is big enough that we can see it unlike the pattern photo. Honestly, if I just saw that pattern I would've skipped right over it and not even thought, gee how did they make those corners.

Shichemell, I see you have finished your clue#2 so I am wondering if you are back to your bath mat. This pattern intrigues me, I still cannot figure how the ending corners work. How is it coming along?

I am seriously thinking about getting out some yarn and making a double thick one for a dog mat just to see! Like I don't have enough other projects, primarily getting clue #2 to work out size wise. :)

OK, I’m all done the bath mat (which I will be using as a kitchen mat).

I actually used plastic grocery bags to make this instead of yarn - it’s my first project using plarn, and I thought this pattern would work well. I’m rather pleased with the results. :) I hope I didn’t resize the pics too small. I can repost a larger one if you would like.

:bravo: That is too cool! Looks like you have been saving alot of bags too so particularly crafty in even making mat with a colored pattern! From your photos which were thankfully large enough for me to see, did you actually braid the plastic first? I saw websites where people are making sleeping mats for the homeless out of plarn, and thought I might give that a try but the patterns just call for cutting the plastic into strips and not braiding them. Really nice project you completed! Reuse and recycle, way to go!

Thank you! :D

Yes, we save the bags every time we get them. We use them as garbage can liners, but this project used so many we're almost out!

I didn't do anything special with the strips at all. Just cut the bags into thin loops, hooked 'em together and away I went. :knit:

Well now you got me thinking, and I may be asking you for help!. One of my foster dogs most likely will be going to his new home in two weeks. That will give me plenty of time to try this pattern edging, around a small log cabin pattern mat for him to have at his new house. Not so much for physical comfort, but something that is his and that new owner can teach him to go to his mat (she does not crate). So I get to try two new patterns, use up some yarn, and send him off with a little gift. He is only 30 pounds so I shouldn't have to spend days and days working on it.
Will let you know when I get to those pesky corners!
