So I had to rip out the first half of the square - it was way to big! :smashy: I am going to go down to size 7 and try it again. :scared: Seriously, I can't stand redoing anything! I know you don't like it either but I have a habit of not going back to it because I am annoyed. I am not going to do that, I am going to get back on the wagon and :knit:

Also, I can't knit right now since I have to mad clean the house! My little girl's birthday is tomorrow and of course it is at my house. So no :knit: for me :tears: I read the forum in the morning and afternoon on breaks so I can keep up with everyone. Tomorrow night the :knit: is back on!!!

Re: Clue 3 - KAL - Gauge Problems

Postby gerrier2 » Fri Mar 02, 2012 12:00 pm

My guage is also off. My squares for clue 1 are 11" and I'm using a 4.24 needle. The squares in the 2nd clue were way too big so redid it with 5 less stitches. Since my afgan may be larger may have to buy more yarn.
Is there a dye lot to the Waverly yarn?

Gosh, I'm with you on the yarn. I'm enjoying the way it works up. Has a nice, cushy feel, and I think it will make a nice, warm blanket.

This Clue gave me some issues also.
The first half went fine but I kept messing up the second half.

I got the first 6 row repeat with out a problem, but kept messing up the next repeat.
Thinking this clue was easy knitting for me...I didnt pay attention. When will I learn????
Kept messing up which row I was on so my count was off and the square looked funky.
After ripping it out 4 times, I finally used a post it note to keep track of which row I was on and it worked out much better.

I am not sure if I am explaining this well but what helped me to keep track when doing the second half is that in each 6 row repeat the Knit 1 below's are in a different place than the last repeat but are on top of each other in each repeat.
So as long as I did row 1 correct, the knit 1 belows in Rows 3 and 5 should be in the same spot as Row 1.

I completed one square and like many of you, the first half is too big so I started the second square knitting tighter and hope that works. If not I will have to go down in needle size. Have to wait and see how much the first square bothers me before I decide if I rip it out or not.

Both sides should be the same. It should be a square.

Thanks.

Umm, my first half of clue 3 is about a half inch bigger than the second half, and no amount of stretching or blocking will help it. The second half is right on gauge. Will it help to use a smaller needle for the first half?

I know people are finding different ways to even up their squares. I found what has worked for me is to start with one size needle smaller and stop the first triangle at 49 stitches. Because this is two pattern repeat rows away from the 53 advised pattern sts. I compromised, on the decrease part w/ color C after the two K rows, by skipping the 1st and 3rd pattern row and starting with the 5th. This has worked out perfectly and my squares are the same size as all of the rest. Also, for the second half of the triangle I switched back to the original size needle.

Love this hint. I forgot to move my marker up from the first half to the second half and got confused. I can't believe it took me two nights of knitting to complete one of these squares. And from reading the posts, I think I may have done something wrong. But I love the way my square looks, so I will continue on with what I have - hoefully I remember what I did on the first square with the remaining 7.
