pull-out skeins

Postby JazzHooked » Fri Mar 02, 2012 4:21 pm

This is mostly just a mini-vent....does anyone else get as endlessly frustrated with "pull-out" skeins that WILL NOT pull-out? they're wrapped as if you should be able to. You can't really "Unroll" it from the outside cuz then it will either get dirty rolling around on the floor, or stuck in your yarn feeder/jar, or you're constantly yanking on it in order to get more yarn.

so....you DIG DIG DIG into the middle of the skein trying to find the end....you guess, then start tugging. tug on the wrong bit, and you have a knot. now you have no choice but to pull the whole )(*@#$%)(* knot out, and start untangling it.

so, what the @)$(%* is the point of a pull-out skein that won't pull out? I've run into this with soooo many yarn. i wouldn't think it would be soooo difficult to snag the end on something in the factory so that it's possible to find the bloody thing when you want to USE it.

jus' sayin'.

yeah. exactly what i do with every darn skein, which results in the ball of nonsense you have to untangle. and if by chance you don't QUITE get close to the right area tugged "gently" out, the resulting knot is ungodly.

but i have used other types of yarn where you find the outer tail, pull it out....turn the skein over and VOILA there is the inner tail!!! hanging OUT of the opposite side!!!

not hidden. not in the middle of a escher-esque tangle of whatsis that you've already half-disgorged your entire skein trying to find....just...THERE.

ya see what ah mean, vern?

JazzHooked, Too funny! When I buy yarn I look to see if there are any skeins at all that have the center tail already hanging out the other side. Sometimes I rearranged the whole yarn section at a store looking for them but nicely put it back by lot number since I am looking at that too. If I cannot find any, I just take it home and roll it into a ball myself before I even begin, which is much more relaxing that unknotting it during the middle of some project. I don't have any luck with all that gently pulling of the middle ball, I don't think Escher was diabolical! All I can think is that that lady was sweating bullets she could find it so easily. Or maybe that was like the tenth reshoot of that video.

I use a similar technique to find the center of my skeins, but I push my index fingers in both sides until they touch, so I KNOW I'm in the center. Then, I wiggle around until I find the loose center section. It works well for me!

Here's my little video. Turn down your speakers, though, because there is loud music. 8-)

yeah i use that technique too on certain skeins. sometimes it works. but wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to do that? if ALL pull-out skeins had an actual pull-out tail?

Well tried the poking around method today on two smaller skeins. After having duh moment like remove the label first, I did manage to find the centers in those two. Was quite pleasantly surprised. However I am using two huge turkey size balls of yarn as well, I cannot even reach to the middle.
