It looks like you're trying to match the K1below all the way through the square. The original design doesn't do that. But, if you like it that way, just keep it and love it! ;)

Ha! I bet it DID look like Christmas with gold knitting needles and that red and green yarn!

Yeah, the pattern says to knit TWO rows before starting the new design. That way, you are on the right side of the fabric for Row 1 of the second half design.

Some of the squares might have some size issues, since the purl stitch is included.
Some knitters make their purl stitches bigger than their knit stitches, and this causes a change in the gauge.

Half of this square has purl stitches, and the other half has none. That could explain the difference for some of you.

:hellogoodbye: I was wondering today if it's possible that the K1below could be part of the size issues. Because when you K1below, 2 loops are being "knitted out" since we're knitting an extra row lower than normal. Does that make sense? And I noticed that when I K1below, the stitch is poofy-er because of the extra loop. I'm not sure if this makes sense to anyone else, but this is just something I'm observing as I knit. ;) I really am enjoying the textures of these 2 patterns in Clue #3! :cloud9:

That's a good point! The K1below could possibly be drawing up that 2nd side, and making it a bit shorter.

I ended up ripping out the second half of the square after all. I noticed when I put all three clues together that I used the wrong color on the second half. So I decided to redo that and then do the square right. I did the first four rows about six times before I realized you knit two rows after the color change. I should have read your post before that! Lol. Live and learn. Now I am back on track.

I was actually thinking the same thing on this clue and also relating it to clue 2 with the shaker rib. If you think about it, when you k1 below and are leaving the yarn from the prev row unworked and working 2 rows below - does it make sense that if that yarn is unworked that it would tend to make your work wider since normally that yarn would form an up and down loop of a k or p st. Maybe I'm getting too visual in my head here...

To me the k1 below would make your work wider but perhaps shorten a bit on the vertical (depending on how many k1 below sts are in each row) since you are leaving yarn unworked sideways but going in to sts from the prev 2 rows?

Just thinking... :hrmm:

My sister is near San Diego. Close to all those nice beaches. It's beautiful there!
She's been there for several years, and usually comes to visit NC about once a year. But last year, she brought me and my oldest son there to visit her instead. Paid for our flights and let us stay in her home. It was a very nice vacation for both of us.

What a great sister! You all look so happy and relaxed. Last night we got 7 inches of snow and this morning it is a beautiful winter wonderland out there and 33 degrees. I would much rather be on the beach. Thanks for posting this WARM picture! :D

But I am having a lot more fun making this square than any of the other ones so far and I wanted to show off how much I finished in just over an hours work. Mind you, that was learning what was wanted of me. I love how we are building on previous skills as we go along, doesn't feel overwhelming this way.
Can you tell how off my lighting is? Same square pictured, just different sides and they look like two different colours!

**Edit**
I replaced my previous photos with my half way progress photos.
Didn't take as long to get that much more done than the first bit, just over another hour. I figure the whole thing will take me about 4-5 hours. And just to be clear, we have to make 8 identical ones eh?

*Edit*
My finished square is more rectangle. My first side is way big compared to my second side. Should I try using smaller needles to do the first half?

So is mine. What's up? Clue 1 & 2 have worked out to the exact measurement.

...it said in the beginning instructions for clue 3... 2 things to remember....the instructions sound like it should be shaker style knit (like clue 2), but it isn't AND the second half of the square will look nothing like the first.
so, don't give up....don't take it apart.
