I was actually thinking the same thing on this clue and also relating it to clue 2 with the shaker rib. If you think about it, when you k1 below and are leaving the yarn from the prev row unworked and working 2 rows below - does it make sense that if that yarn is unworked that it would tend to make your work wider since normally that yarn would form an up and down loop of a k or p st. Maybe I'm getting too visual in my head here...
To me the k1 below would make your work wider but perhaps shorten a bit on the vertical (depending on how many k1 below sts are in each row) since you are leaving yarn unworked sideways but going in to sts from the prev 2 rows?
