2010 Mystery Afghan CAL - Join in here

Anyone wanna join me in making last times CAL?

I was able to find enough of the Softee Chunky yarn for under $30 so picked up enough to make this afghan.
Then it occured to me with this new area on the forums I could find company while I make it and we can make it together. I never did make it last time, The yarn was just too expensive for me at that time, but I have admired the photos here; http://www.flickr.com/photos/bernatyarns/sets/72157625374793781/ and am finally ready to get to work on it, during any down time on this years Mystery afghans! If not down time then at least when I need to work on something different!

My colours will be;
A - Eucalyptus
B - Royal Blue
C - Seagreen
D - Lavender
E - Beetroot

I did pick my colours by looking at the final design and then decided where to place them. Not being a mystery sort of gave me that advantage!

This is what I have so far
I finished the first 3 clues. I have been making them 8" square, all but clue 1, some reason I cannot get that one to be square. The large centre one is missing a row near the end in order to get it to measure 16". Another advantage to knowing the mystery! Now I can decide to sew what I have together as I go to save time later or wait till all squares are completed?
I saw someone else mention they started this CAL when it was going on but they never finished, sure hope you will join me now and get it done! Anyone? Come on, don't let my husband be the only one who has to listen to me! Save him, join me!

I used some of these motifs, including the mitered square, to make lapghan for my Dad. I seamed the whole thing together with a technique that I think is recommended for this, maybe mattress stitch? I really liked the way this stitch works and it makes very nice seam. But if you are not familiar with it, you may want to practice it first on some squares that have a finished edge. Somewhat unfortunately I was first learning this technique on the raw edges of the mitered squares and they looked sort of funky. Also, my yarn was not really gliding through nicely when I was using this seaming technique, it wanted to sort of bunch up. I found some thinner yarn, Simply Soft, that flew through the stitches making the seaming very easy, and I was very happy to learn that seaming technique. Just wish I hadn't "practiced" it on those raw edges first.
Some of the squares were a little small, I think V stitch? I had looked back at past posts, seems easy to just add a row of sc around the square, which makes it a lot easier to seam to other motifs too.

I LOVE that seaming technique--so easy and looks great!!! I did do one round of sc around all my motifs for the 2010 CAL and am doing it again for the 2012 CAL--I find that it makes seaming much easier and gives substance to the motifs. I actually did 3 rows of sc along the rough edges of the mitred squares and it gave an "+" in the middle--very interesting look.

I am about to seam together the squares I made for an afghan for my sister's new house and I definitely plan to use the Bernat method. I used to dread seaming but now I actually look forward to it.
