Scotchguard for crochet projects?

Is there such a thing as a scotchguard for crochet fabric? I'm making one of the Bernat market bags using the Handicrafter's Cotton and was wondering if there was a sealant or if the fabric could be scotchguarded? I was hoping to find a yarn that was already coated, but was unsuccessful. I just thought it might be a little more durable and protect it from rainy walks home?

Any suggestions?

There is a Scotchguard spray. Why not spray the finished item?

You could use nylon twine they sell in hardware stores that construction people use to mark lines, it comes in all different colors. Don't know what pattern you are using but the market pattern bags I have seen have fairly open mesh, so thinking if the bag gets wet, the items in the bag will get wet too. You could keep a plastic bag in the market bag and if it rains put the bag and its contents in the plastic bag.
