I have taken to ignoring the directions for where to place the double crochets on the last row. To start a row I slip stitch to a nice spot to start and begin the row, if I slipped to the large corner chain space then I know I need to put in 3 doubles and chain, if I ended up slipping into the popcorn to start the third row I do my start double there and then continue. I know in a row there needs to be 13 doubles, so I put three in the corner, then into the very centre of the popcorn I insert my hook all the way through the whole popcorn stitch and complete my fourth double, then into the space beside, which should be my chain one from row below, I put 2 doubles. I then put my seventh into the middle popcorn, once again going all the way through. Next I put the 8 and 9 into the next space and the tenth double into the last popcorn and then the last three into the corner space. Do my chain and repeat the process. On the last round I just add up how many I have there now in that row (3, 4 or 5) and then add stitches till I reach 13. In the end I my final thread may end up in a different place than the directions say, but it still works out, so am not worried.
You will notice if you look carefully that my end thread is in three different spots on each of the motifs!
