I like your method 4grammy4!! What I've been doing is using a row counter that I slide onto my needle. I also use a post-it-note on my instruction sheet to keep my eyes focused on the correct row. I still keep a marker hooked onto the increase and decrease side of the fabric. I love this pattern knitted on the bias!
