I grew up in North Carolina, and ate a lot of creamsicles too. Especially during our unbearably hot summers, after helping to harvest the garden. We didn't have tangerine groves, though. But we had lots of other stuff: green beans, collard greens, crowder peas, okra, tomatoes, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, tobacco, watermelon, squash, canteloupes, strawberries, onions, popcorn, peppers, etc.

But, I HATED working in the garden. :?

I imagine your summers were hotter than ours since we had the Gulf breezes--the Gulf was 1/4 mile from our house in Florida. I think I would have loved to have all the great veggies you had but they would not grow in the sandy Florida soil. I hated working in the yard when I was young and now you can't get me in the house to do housework when there is gardening or yard work to do. We live in the northeast corner of Georgia and can grow all of those veggies here--love the garden and the seasons. This time of year I am totally torn between crochet and planning the garden and since it is so warm already, I think I hear tomatoes calling already!!!! You knitted that great mitred square for your mother; I am working on growing water cress for mine. "Green, green, it's green they say...."

It's easy to me. I just keep moving the stitch marker up to the current row after I work the decrease, so it's easy peasy.

You were lucky! We would very occasionally get some breezes. When they came, we would all stand up and hold out our arms to savor it. Then, the moment would pass, and we would be hunched over the plants again. It was torture. The garden was more than 2 acres, and we harvested it all by hand, so it felt like our work would never end.

We had fun with watermelons, though. The other people in the neighborhood would come over, and we would have seed spitting contests, or cut out watermelon rind to make "green teeth".

Ok, I've made a couple dishcloths with free patterns.
Now, I think I'll use one of the Bernat pattern books in my library.

I have plenty of bright colored Bernat Handicrafter Cotton in my stash

And there are lots of fun, bright dishcloth designs in the "Bright Ideas" pattern book.

I have that book too! Once I get my last 9 popcorn squares finished for my second CAL I may join you making one of those cloths.
I asked my daughter before she left if she wanted one of my new flower ones (earlier in this topic) and she turned it down. :( "I only use those to get the tea stains out of our cups, I use sponges the rest of the time"
So I offered to make her the little round scrubbies in place of a sponge and she turned that down too. She must be feeling better!
I never think of handicrafter cotton for afghans though, it is just not soft enough for my likes, and if not soft I don't know how I can ever make a whole huge project with it.

Cool! I might need some advice with some of the stitching, since it's crochet.
I'm learning a lot with our CALs here! :D

Hey, if your daughter doesn't want the dishcloths, just make them for yourself!

About cotton blankets, I've been thinking it might be nice to make one for my outside patio. Sometimes there are some breezes that come along when I'm sitting out there, and it would be nice to have a cotton blanket to grab. I don't think the rain would hurt it, and it would definitely be durable.
