Knit-Along Week 5

Postby Kaleigh » Wed Mar 14, 2012 10:00 am

This week is a break week for us knitters so those of us who are behind have a chance to catch up!

If you haven’t started blocking your squares, now is the perfect time to start – and that’s what we’ll be talking about this week. We have a video tutorial on blocking motifs in case you’ve never tried blocking before. If you have, why not share your experiences with the board? We’d love to see what tips and tricks everybody has come up with!

Why is blocking important? When making an afghan out of squares, it’s important that each motif is consistent in two ways:
  • Size
  • Shape
If you sew together unblocked squares it’s likely that your blocks won’t line up properly, and some of them might pucker. Right now your squares might have sides that aren’t perfectly straight – maybe they’ve been pulled a little, or they look squiggly. With blocking, you can turn that squiggly square into one made of beautiful right angles, so when it’s time to seam you’ll be ready to go!

Skills You’ll Learn & Use:

Tips:
  • A great place to start is the Blocking Motifs thread, so if you’re looking for some extra advice you should check it out!
If you have any questions, this thread is the place to ask and answer!

Members will be showing ways to block their squares, so there may be spoiling photos in this thread.

When you’ve finished your squares, come show us what you think the order of the motifs will be in the "Knit-Along Week 5: Blanket Possibilities" thread!

When you're done blocking all of your squares, you deserve a new badge! This one is more of a participation badge since this is a rest week.

Just open the User Control Panel's "Signature" page. In the field where you type your signature, add the code below and you'll be able to show off your progress! It's a good idea to replace last week's badge with this one so your signature isn't cluttered :)

I am so glad there isn't a new clue this week. Once I finish the CAL clue I can work on all the previous KAL clues and not feel like I'm getting even further behind.

Great time for a catch up week. With all the extra time, I will be able to redo my mistake squares. I am still not sure if I will be blocking my squares. They are fairly close to being square and my edges seem straight. I might change my mind. :idonno:

Guess I better get back to :knit: so I can start playing with possibilities.

Thank goodness. This takes the pressure off since I was worried about getting too far behind. I have 5 of clue 1, 1.5 of clue 2, 2 of clue 3 and 1 of clue 4.

YAY!! I was hoping for a catch-up week!! Woohoo!! I have 2 1/2 of Clue #4 to do and 3 of Clue #1 to do. Also need to take several rows off each of my Clue #2 squares since I made them too long. :o Fortunately, I've been blocking all my squares as I go so no catching up with that. Whew! Actually...I wish there would be 2 catch-up weeks; but...maybe I'll make it in the one week. So on I :knit: :knit: :knit: !! Happy knitting to all of you!! :cloud9:

My fingers thank you! I have just 3 squares to make up. Two from the first week as I got a late start. I am already thinking of all the extra time I will have this week for all the other things that need my attention because I have been so busy with my afghan.

We'll all just have to cope with the suspense of... how will this thing look once we have it put together. I am still wondering if it will only be our color A that will be used for the boarder or between panels? Loving the mystery!
