Crochet-Along Clue 5

Are people finding that you all need to use the same size hook as for the other octagons? I found that I've been having to use a larger hook for the octagons vs. the squares...

Oddly enough, I actually found that my octagons were coming out too small (about 9") with the I hook. My belief about why that happened is because a) I had become too confident that the bigger hook would solve the sizing issue, so I did not relieve the tension and b) because of the material of the hook. I noticed with my other projects, the yarn did not behave quite as well using a plastic hook, vs a metal one.

But was the hook you used larger or smaller than what you used before? I just was trying to figure out if I should use my L hook (what I used for the other Octagons) or K hook (what i used for the squares). I'd rather have an idea, before I begin (LOL)! I'm a tight crocheter, which is why I'm using such large ones.

Can we please get the spacing fixed in the first line of Round 5? I'm having a hard time keeping my place.

Teeyay, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm having a heck of a time reading them and staying on the right line even when they are spaced correctly. I've actually had to go and highlight every second line, and use alternating colours for each round. I'm so sad for me.

And I don't even wear glasses!!

Last night I was behind a lady wearing a mop cap a lot like the Grandma in "Little Red Riding Hood". Now we are doing Granny Squares. This week, it will be really hard to concentrate on the octagon without seeing images from the tale.

Having a tighter tension myself, I would suggest using the bigger size hook to start. For the first clue I used an I, the second a J, and the 3rd and 4th a K hook. For this one I started with the I and it was an entire inch too small! For I am working on the 5th round using a J hook this time. I will let you know how it turns out as soon as I am finished!

The tip for clue #1 said to leave a 12 inch tail for seaming? Are most people doing this or are you weaving in the tails as you go? And if you are leaving the tail, are you leaving it that long for all of the clues?

I have not left the 12". I've done that before and find I either have way too much or way too little. I'm also thinking of just using one color for joining these little motifs together, rather than a whole bunch of colors just because it's there. Just my humble opinion....

I have not left the 12" tail either. In other motif afghans, I have used one of the colors to join. However, this is the first afghan with different size pieces within the blanket so I'm not sure how the joining process is different. I really am enjoying this community of crocheters, I am usually the only crocheter at the local yarn store stitch-ins & often feel like I'm from a different planet.

Finally finished my first Clue 5 and it was 12"! Frogged the last three rounds and tightened up my tension. Now it's 11 1/4". I am going with it. I am now tightening up my tension an little going forward. Who woulda thunk this would be a challenge to get started!

I've just completed one granny octagon using the same hook that I used for the other octagon clues and it came out the same size as them.

I spent most of the day at the dentist, getting three fillings. (I don't want any more root canals!)

When I got home, my internet wasn't working right, so I turned off the computer for now. Using my little cellphone to browse the forum.

I'm gonna take a nap now, and check back in a little later...hopefully on my computer!

So I just finished with the J hook and it is STILL too small! So I am moving up to a K hook. I am starting to get frustrated! I might scream if I have to move up to an L hook! This will be the 3rd time I've made my 1st octagon! I could be half done for the week if i could get this tension figured out!!!!!!!!!

I was using the I hook previously, for this clue, switched to the original H hook, found that too large, STILL so I am now using an 4.5mm hook and everything is coming out bang on.
