Re: Charity Knitting & Crochet

Lately, I've been making blankets for the children's domestic violence shelter in my area. So far, I've given them 8 blankets and 2 knitted toys. Occasionally, my online friends will mail squares to me, so I can seam them together to make blankets for the shelter. Also, I will look through thrift stores, to see if I can come across any well-made, unused knitted or crocheted blankets.

Here is one big granny square I found at Goodwill for a couple dollars. It was too small, so I added 6 more rows to make it big enough for the shelter. Whoever made this had a very tight gauge. I had to use a size E hook with worsted weight yarn.

Here's another blanket I found at Goodwill. It was beautifully crocheted, but had unfinished edges on the sides. Also, the yarn ends were cut short after being tightly knotted! Ack! So, I added a simple (not beautiful) white border on the sides. I hope it helps to keep those ends in place. Image

Here are several of the squares that have been given to me for the blankets. I laid them out on the floor last night, and put them in a decent arrangement.

Now, I'm adding a border around each square, using bright yellow yarn.

When I finish the yellow borders, they will be ready to seam together.

That is a terrific idea to find projects that need just a little bit extra finishing up.
The charity to which I usually donate welcomes 6 and 12 " squares. That is why I asked in a different topic if there is a general rule of thumb of approximately how many stitches there are to different size squares so it might be easier for them to piece them together. (no one answered ?) Seems like a challenging task to me!
Keep up the great work! I am sure that your donations will provide some appreciative people much comfort and cheer.!

I don't know of a general rule of thumb, because everyone has a different gauge.
When I receive squares for my blankets, I always add a border around them. Sometimes I have to add a double or triple border, to get them the right size. Then I can seam them together.

If you do a search on the internet, you'll find several good patterns to make squares.
I even designed a 12 inch knitted square myself!
