Thread crochet is tighter than yarn crochet, therefore you learn a tighter tension in order to get the right look in thread. And if you learned to crochet using thread this may very well be why your tension is tight! I learned with thread, my mom created doilies galore, she never read a pattern in her life but could create any design you asked her to just by describing it to her, and I learned to crochet copying her. It was such a tiny sentence in a huge book that said this about tension, but it makes so much sense! I have not used thread in maybe 20 years and until I tried learning how to hold yarn for knitting my crochet was always tight.
This is a very pretty pillow pattern and such a new way to use doilies!
