I've come across quite a few people, from various parts of the world, who call ALL yarn "wool". It does sometimes cause confusion to those of us who only call actual wool yarns "wool". We call them all "yarn", to include all fibers.....you call them all "wool" to include all fibers, and it makes us raise one eyebrow in consternation.
I believe it is a generation thing. My Grandmother and husband's mother will call all fibre wool (they are the same age). My hubby picked up this habit and I am forever correcting him. I think I used to call it wool too, but was able to break myself of the habit easier than my husband has been able to.
I notice most older people will mostly call all fibre wool. Anyone over 50 has the habit unless they were broken of it!
