I'm not sure I understand how to work into the side of a sc either. I have a feeling I'll be searching google for some help in a little bit.

I tried Google and didn't find anything, please post a link if you find one. Here is what it seems like to me, after working a couple: think of a single crochet as the letter T. We normally crochet into the top of the stitch, which would be like the horizontal line of the T. I think that stitching "into the side" means you would stitch into the vertical part of the T instead of the horizontal part. That's probably clear as mud, but it seems to make sense when you're stitching!
