I would leave them loose for now.

This page I'm referring you to is a crochet website, and has several options for seaming squares together:

Looking at clue 5(week 6), do you let the stripes go lengthwise? That is how I am doing it, but didn't know if anyone had expertise on which would look better. I hope I am clear on what I am asking.

What a good point! We laid them out is vertically, so in the image below those brown lines are supposed to be the columns of shaker rib.
But the beauty of this is that you can lay them out any way you want!

The advantage of laying them vertically is that they won't get extra stretchy in the rib with time (think of a skirt cut on the bias whose hem gets uneven with time because of the weight of the skirt pulling differently at different areas of the garment), because the afghan is usally draped lengthwise in order to see the design. If they are turned to go horizontally, then they will stretch more in the rib with the weight of the afghan. I think they could be used well horizontally if you plan to put them in the four corners, as those are edges and will have less weight pulling on them. If you need a bit more stretch though because some of your blocks came out a little bigger, it could be advantageous to place them horizontally.
