I'm going to HAVE to block the orange mandala blanket i'm working on in order to get it to lie properly. but it's big (about 5' diameter), i have to use steam, and I dont' have a non-wooden surface anywhere handy I can do that one...can't use carpeted floors, can't use hardwood floors, can't use wooden kitchen table. suggestions? weather's not nice enough to do it outside on the deck..and that's wood too! when i was a teenager I once put a towel down on my mom's good antique mahogany dining room table and did my ironing on that cuz I was too lazy to get out the ironing board.....boy did i catch hell for THAT, and for good reason. I put a permanent white spot on the table which is still there (it's my table now). jaz

Shandeh posted her star afghan that she blocked after it was finished but I don't remember what thread it was--really unique method of blocking.

Here's how I blocked my big star blanket - ON THE WALL!
The wall had some issues anyway, and was soon to be repaired. So, blocking just caused a few more tiny pinholes. The water didn't damage the wall, so it was fine.

Right there with ya! I am doing both, too. At first I was just going to do the KAL, but I haven't crocheted in 20 years, had some stash yarn to use up, and thought it would be fun. Have my crochet clues complete, but still have three clue 3's to knit before seaming.

I do not block acrylic afghans, either. After the afghan is seamed, one trip through the washer, partial dry in the dryer, and laid out in shape to finish drying does the trick for me. I also use this technique when washing an acrylic afghan when it needs cleaning.

However, I knit a lot of garments with natural fibers and ALWAYS block natural fiber.

I'd call that a form of blocking! Anything where you get it wet and then lay it out in the right shape to dry counts in my book.

We've explained in other comments in this post that the knitters have already had a break week (during week 5), and next week crocheters will find out how to put their blanket together. Don't worry, we're not done yet! ;)

Sorry for any confusion Emilie! We'll be releasing the 'official' layout next week. We thought it would be fun to see what everyone could come up with in the meantime while some folks are catching up. Knitters had a catch up week 2 weeks ago, ours just came a little bit later.
