savvysherri,
I don't remember where I saw that was the technique that was used, somewhere in a zillion posts. Here is a description and there are many youtube videos too.

Place project with right sides facing you, edges together (not facing one another as in other methods but lying next to one another so that you see both right sides). Thread needle with matching yarn. Secure yarn through both sides at the edge where you intend to join. With needle pointing up, place the point into the last st (you might consider this the first stitch) and take a small st, leaving yarn loose. Go to the opposite piece and pick up the corresponding row. Return to the first side, enter the last point of exit and pick up a st. Be sure to keep the needle pointing up to the top of the work, rather than to the side of the work.

Tighten yarn in seam after picking up 3 or 4 sts. Yarn must be tight enough to disappear but not enough to pucker at the seam.

dcrozier, when you did the extra row(s) of sc, did you use another color, or one of the ones you used for the afghan?

Here's Bernat's page for finishing techniques. Mattress Stitch is the first one mentioned.

And here's a good tutorial on Knitty: http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring04/mattress.html

Thank you dogfoster and Shandeh for the information on seaming pieces together, they really do clear things up.

Really want to join in on this CAL but I am going to have to wait...too many projects going on right now. I am looking forward to seeing pictures, though! And will check in here when I'm ready to start it. I printed the instructions and charts off...

I was looking at all the afghans on Flicker link last night. Looks like they had some kind of competition at the end. Did anyone find the link to which ones were the winners? Just curious. They were all winners in my opinion, so much beautiful work into each one.

The winner was Janice from Loxathatchee, FL.

Welcome to everyone who has joined me in making this!
I haven't worked on this as much as I would have liked lately. (my ADD was trying to rear its ugly head)
I did get a few more squares done and am now working on the mitred one. I dreaded it terribly after all the comments I read. I have found the hardest thing about this square is keeping track of the first row. Once you have the first row done it is less difficult, unless you count all those dreaded ends! I think I can use them to help seam the squares together.
2010 CAL Mitered squares.JPG

A little trick I did was to follow the patterns suggestion and mark the centre stitch. Once the first row is perfect and that centre stitch is marked, (just move the marker each row once that stitch is complete) it really is a very easy square. Then again, I am also doing one other trick to help me make it easier, maybe you will find it will help you too, I am working on one colour at a time. Then I start the next square. I now have 7/16 started. A couple are a little further ahead out of ADD curiosity. One is much further ahead, but sadly I ran out of the (pink) I was using early. I admit I haven't finished a single one yet, so maybe it will get tougher closer to the end? I sure hope not!

I am not able to join in on this years CAL because I am on a deadline to finish another 2010 one ... this will be my third.

When it comes to doing the mitered squares, I don't do the four seperate squares and then join ... I do one big square and work from the centre out ... it is much easier, and almost looks square, although it will still definately need blocking.

I am happily saving all the clues for the 2012 CAL ready to do later in the year once I finish all the other projects that I have promised to people. I have already thought of two different people to make the 2012 afghan for, I think I am a glutton for punishment ... one day I hope to make something for myself !!

Happy hooking :D
