Knit-Along Clue 7 (Week 8)

Postby Kaleigh » Wed Apr 04, 2012 10:00 am

Welcome to the final week of your Mystery Afghan! This week we’re ending with the top and bottom borders, which unlike last week’s clue are knit directly onto the afghan instead of sewn on afterwards.

There are still a couple of weeks left in the KAL/CAL, so don't think you're free yet! We'll have some questions, some quizzes, and maybe even a draw ;)

You’ll need what you have left of Contrast A and your circular needle!

Pattern

Skills You’ll Learn & Use
Tips
  • You are instructed to “cast off in pat,” meaning to cast off in the pattern. When casting off normally you knit one stitch, then the next, and then you pull the first stitch over the second. In this case, because the pattern alternates knit and purl stitches, you will knit one, purl one, pull the knit over the purl, knit one, pull the purl over the knit, and continue in this fashion.
  • Mark the stitches you plan to pick up beforehand so you’re confident about the placement. One way you can do this is to take scrap yarn and a large eye, blunt tip needle and run it through the stitches you plan to pick up, then use that as a guide when picking up and knitting the stitches. You can also place stitch markers at the end of a section, or in every number of predetermined stitches (ex. twenty).
If you have any questions, this thread is the place to ask and answer!

Please do not post any photos to this thread. They belong in the "Knit-Along Clue 7 (Week 8): Finished Blanket Photos" thread!

When you're done YOUR ENTIRE AFGHAN (you're done!!), why not pat yourself on the back and add a badge to your signature?

Just open the User Control Panel's "Signature" page. In the field where you type your signature, add the code below and you'll be able to show off your progress! It's a good idea to replace last week's badge with this one so your signature isn't cluttered :)

Glad to see that this is an easy border to enlarge. I have made 4 extra squares for Clue 2 and Clue 4, to make my afghan longer. I added length to the side borders and I am going to add 2 cable panels to make it wider, because this is for a wedding gift, and I want them to be able to snuggle together under the afghan. A seed stitch border is easy to enlarge.

I have learned not to look at this as a race. :o Initially I was not peeking at the next clue until I finished the previous one, but soon learned it paid to be behind, so others could encounter the issues and pose the questions and get the answers before I tackled the same clue. Now that we have them all, I am peeking WAY ahead (I only have 4 squares of Clue 3 completed) and using the beautiful photos of everyone's completed work to inspire me to finish. I love the border and can't wait to see fully completed images. Go fellow knitters :knit: :knit: :knit: :bravo:

 I was hoping that the bottom and top borders would match the side borders, but maybe it'll look better this way. I'll be sad when the KAL is over too!!

I don't think I have ever knit this much to quickly! Have loved the challenge and I have loved the "need " to keep up with it because it is one less thing in the old UFO pile. Thanks Bernat of a fun and interesting challenge. Cannot wait to see how it looks when finished! :bravo:

i still have 5 more squares to knit and all of the seaming to do, but i took a break to try out the side borders. the lacy parts are probably my favorite of what we've knit so far, and i was hoping for something similar for the top border... but i am looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. can't wait to see everyone's pictures!

This is the first time that the next clue has come up and I haven't finished the last clue. I knew I would get behind on this one. It is the end of the KAL, so I could finish it next year. LOL (like a lot of my patterns). What someone('Kikibatt') called their UFOs. I like that.
