How much time invested in your KAL/CAL?

Postby K1P1quebec » Mon Apr 02, 2012 3:27 pm

I'm wondering if anyone is keeping track of the time they have invested in their KAL or CAL project. I never used to do this, but when my mom started making quilts and people in shops couldn't understand why handmade quilts were so pricey, she started keeping track of the hours she spent on each quilt she made. I think she records them in a book, but sometimes on her tag that reads Lovingly made for you by____, she writes in the number of hours she spent making it. (She doesn't sell them - just makes them for family members). She uses it more for keeping track of estimating how much time she will need to do a certain sort of project in future rather than thinking about the value of each particular quilt, but people usually say WOW when she can answer "How much time did it take you to DO that"?

Anyway, I got to thinking about the hours I have spent on my KAL.

Choosing yarn, ordering, colour tutorials, etc. = 2 hours (I agonize more than others)
Making gauge swatch = 1 hour
Knitting 24 blocks (approx. 5 hrs per block) = 120 hours (I'm slower than some)
Mistakes (frogging, redoing blocks, etc.) = 20 hours (oh, those 4 difficult clue 3 blocks!)
Seaming = 5 hours (that one surprised me - went faster than I expected!)
Making borders (still working on it!)

So far 148 hours. Adds up fast when you're having fun! :knit:

And I'm not counting taking photos and chatting on the forum!
That doesn't count (well, maybe if you come to get help or have questions. Maybe that should count too. What do you think? Maybe I should put in there some time off for frustration or working through....hmmmm)

It took me over a month to decide. Not thinking about it every day, of course! But à total of two hours spread out over 5 weeks!

I was knitting at night while watching TV and determined it took me about 2 hours to knit a square. I realized this when I started a square at the beginning of NCIS, and finished it at the end of NCIS LA!!! One side border took over 3 hours (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1).

One dreary, cold Saturday, I decided to use up some stash yarn and do the CAL, too. I watched a marathon of Psyche (Gus cracks me up) and by the time the all day marathon was over, I had 80% of the CAL complete. Of course I didn't sit and continuously crochet during the whole 8 hours, but the CAL clues went really quick, the larger clues about 30 minutes each, the smaller ones were cranked out in about 15 minutes!

I haven't kept track, if I were I would also have to count all the times people came for a visit and I showed them my box of CAL yarn, took out all the different colours and explained how excited I was for it to start!
