When is it a shawl????

Postby ladycath » Wed Apr 04, 2012 6:57 pm

When is a shawl and when is it a wrap :idonno: I have seen almost identical patterns that one called a wrap and one called a shawl. It is confusing  Are there guidelines for them or is it just what ever the designer wants to call it? Is it regional? I always considered shaped ones, like triangles and half circles, shawls and long rectangular ones wraps. Or any glittery fancy one worn in the evening an evening wrap. :hrmm:

I am working on a triple crochet Vstitch one in Twilight Satin Sparkle right now and truly don't know what to call it.

I too have often wondered about the definition of Shawl or Wrap. I mean, I was under the same impressions as you were. If it had shape it was a shawl. If it was rectangular it was a wrap. I have really been confused by the names online. Is it designers not knowing the difference or did it start out regional and thanks to the internet now it is a total blur?

I went back and asked the designers about this because I wanted to make sure. This was their reaction:

It really only depends on how you want to use it and how you want to call it :)

Funny Kaleigh!

I have seen every shape called by both names.
I've also seen "stole" used occasionally.
