I love this look better than all solid colors. To me, all solid colors is a little overpowering and doesn't flow as nice as making the motifs with color variations in each motif.

I wish I would have followed this idea, like it so much better.

I have contemplated doing the same thing after seeing how it looks with the multi-colored motifs. It blends so much better. I'm not in a hurry to finish it cause I haven't decided if I will keep it or give it away, so I have plenty of time to rework it.

1. The official CAL layout

2. Stripes! (The white clue #1 square would have to be replaced by a red one.)

My preference tends towards the stripes, but my husband seems to think that either would be good.

I prefer the stripes for these colors - that bottom left corner gets too heavy-looking in that dark color for the official layout version, in my humble opinion :).

I think I got it uploaded right this time. ;)

Love your arrangements, crochetfanatic - I also wanted a more symmetrical design. I am using your second layout for my afghan. Thanks for your creativity and willingness to share:)

I think I'm going to go with this instead of the official layout.

I need a 4th flower-based octagon pattern to fill this out - but now that I've finished the "official" blanket (minus the border yet of course), I think I'm going to expand on all the wonderful ideas in this thread (symmetry, multi-color motifs, etc) and work on this next...so if anybody has ideas for that 4th flowery octagon, I'm all ears!

These are my 4 contrast colors - I'm leaving out my beige master color this time.

:bravo: daverett, I agree with others... This looks amazing! Making the motifs multi-colored brings everything together so much better than the single color motifs (in my opinion). This is my first "mystery" CAL and I'm sure I never would have thought to "stray" from the original design. I'm so glad you did. :D As far as clue 5 goes... I think yours looks great the way it is but now you have me seeing things differently so I'm curious how your "re-do" would look. Maybe you should try it and let us help you decide. All kidding aside... FANTASTIC job!! :notworthy:

I think your afghan is my favorite so far...I agree with everyone else. The deviations brings it all together. I think I will do another version that is siminlar....Great job!

And I'm really glad I stuck with a solid color - I didn't have a plan for this originally, but I've now decided it will probably be a wedding gift...

This has been fun, and I'm considering making another!

My second favorite...I love the montone look..

I have had more fun with this. I actually had kids fighting over joining them together. My family calls this afghan "Doilies On Parade" I think I am going to put it on the swing on the sun porch when I am done. It will be an upgrade from the Elvis blanket that is there now.
