2010 Mystery Afghan CAL - Join in here

I am not able to join in on this years CAL because I am on a deadline to finish another 2010 one ... this will be my third.

When it comes to doing the mitered squares, I don't do the four seperate squares and then join ... I do one big square and work from the centre out ... it is much easier, and almost looks square, although it will still definately need blocking.

I am happily saving all the clues for the 2012 CAL ready to do later in the year once I finish all the other projects that I have promised to people. I have already thought of two different people to make the 2012 afghan for, I think I am a glutton for punishment ... one day I hope to make something for myself !!

I understand about finally making something for yourself--I am making the 2012 CAL for our home!!!

I did the mitred squares by increasing instead of decreasing and really liked the look after I finally finished them. I did a SC around all my squares so it put a "+" in the middle of the four joined mitres--interesting look. Have a super weekend.

Been awhile since I updated my progress on this. Simply put, I haven't worked on it as much as I would like. I Did get all of the flower motifs started. Made the flower sections. Then Disney kind of took over then the trip for the funeral then catching up on finishing other projects so I can claim I finished something.
I kind of forget what size hook I was using, so I kind of dread working on a flower only to discover I need to take it out cuz of wrong hook size. I am going to finish my second CAL in the next week or 2 (I still have to make 8 more motifs) then I can dedicate my time to finishing this baby up.
So, if you are at a standstill as I am, please join me again to finish this together! We can do this! Come on friends! If you are in the same boat as I am and forget what hook you used, let's be brave together and start crocheting and figure it out! Yes, we can do this!

OK I'm game! I'm going to take my time with this one though. I've got some other projects started so I'll be working this one in. First I'm going to mull over some colors.

How is everyone doing on their afghan?
Remember, these hot summer months are a decent time to work on motif projects just like this one! They don't sit in your lap making you even hotter. Until you get to the seaming that is!
I have gotten over the half way point I believe. I still have 15 mitred squares and 3 more stripey ones left to do. I finished the 3d flowers. Wish I was smart enough to have made it a 2d one instead. It flops and looks funky till you straighten it out, and who wants to be straightening out stuff while snuggling!?! I also seamed 8 squares together into 2 large ones, same size as the giant granny. So I am slowly plugging along and have not forgotten this project.

I am very curious to know if any one else is still joining me? Remember, the good thing about this style of afghan is less heat! So that isn't a very good excuse!

I am starting a new one using the two square patterns and one of the octogons--the one with the flower. I am using colors that match our bedroom curtains--got the yarn yesterday but chose one that is a little stiffer--want this as a cover, not something in which to cuddle.

I just finished the mitred squares "hot" colors kid-sized blanket for our nephew and will post a pic as soon as it is off the blocking board.

Really glad you are continuing to use this thread--I have missed the company.

Wow that is really cool! You must have loved working that mitred square! It is now the only one I have left to work on, all 16 of them, and I am dreading it something fearful. I hate that I cannot get it to measure 8 inches, If I didn't have to have it a certain size I could do them no problem (I think)

I've been looking for something that I think my son would like (he's 2) and those bright colors are just the thing I believe. I'd love to know a little more about how you made this one and do my own version of it if you don't mind. Thanks!!

I did love doing those mitred squares--they were quick, cheerful and fun. When I did the 2010 CAL, I tried to do the mitred squares the way the directions were printed--long part first and then decreasing. After MULTIPLE failures, I gave up and did the by increasing and they worked just fine. I did have to block them to make them completely square, but they turned out just fine.

A lot of folks had trouble joining them and keeping neat edges. I had done a sc around each one so when I joined them, I got a slightly different look--I posted it on my Ravelry project page if you are interested in seeing how it came out. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/dcrozier

I saw a pattern for it and loved it - Mitered Squares Baby Throw

I used acrylic yarn to get the bright colors and did a sc around the outside edge of each square and added rows of each color to make the border. The last row is reverse sc--good for a boy. The pattern has a diagram that I copied and pasted multiple times onto a sheet of paper and then used colored pencils to fill in the colors until I got a pattern that I really liked. Our nephew's favorite colors are red and blue which is why I used so much of each--he is turning two and it seems to be a great size for little people.
