I love train rides because you can move around and do so much more than when in a car or a plane. A nice long trip sounds like a lot of fun.

Oh, I wish I could take a nice, long, romantic train ride! I sometimes watch "Murder on the Orient Express", just so I can see a beautiful train like that. I also have a DVD set called "Canada by Rail" that shows some nice footage of a transit train.

I rode on a small excursion train once, with my boys when they were little. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.

That is a great train trip--think Dillsboro did a stupid thing by letting the train leave.

I love trains too. I have traveled by train 3 times to Toronto and back. I always think of that song "Driver 8" by R.E.M when I think of those train rides. I also took a train ride in West Virginia, in mountains, in coal mining country near Elkins. I think it would be fun to travel cross-country on a train. I love to hear train whistles at night.

The only thing I don't like about trains is having to wait at crossings.

Sometimes I close my eyes and pretend I live in Florida. Does that count?

well, then, you are close enough to do the Windsor-Québec corridor train tour. Quebec City is fantastic and the train is super. We lived there for 12 years and our 3 boys were all born there. I see you are in Michigan (I lived for 10 years in Wisconsin), so crossing over from Détroit to Windsor on the Ambassador Bridge is easy to do. Or are you further up, Where Marymaxim Town crosses over to Sarnia? (forget thé real name in MI, as I was traumatized that my family full of men wanted to cross Bluewater Bridge ASAP and not stop despite the fact that we were leisurely returning after Christmas in 2010). I did get them to spend some Time in Frankenmuth on the trip into the U.S. and we all have personnalized hand-painted ornaments with our names on them from Bronner's. One of my good friends in high school had grandparents in Frankenmuth, and she had given me an ornament with my name on it from Bronner's over 20 years ago, before internet. I was so thrilled to actually go there and get matching ones for our family, years later!

I CAN see it - armchair traveller extraordinaire! She sits in it with her yarn, watching Miami Vice or some movie filmed there, or even a documentary, eating Key Lime Pie (I actually have some real Key limes in my fridge right now... They just don't compare with regular limes)...... Now we just need some of those crocheted-upon Flip flops!

Wow, K1P1quebec, that train trip would be Awesome! My husband and I have always wanted to visit Quebec City, he even was attempting to learn a little French, at one time! We are Canadiaphiles (is that a word? ;)) We would have to either obtain Passports or an enhanced driver's license, which is required to re-enter the States. No biggie, just a hoop to jump through.
We live about 1 hour (max) east of the Blue Water Bridge. A friend of mine works for MDOT on the bridge. I have been to Mary Maxim twice () even though I have been to Port Huron numerous times. Go figure! :hrmm:
We are about 1.5 hrs max from Ambassador Bridge and the Tunnel to Canada. We've only been to Windsor once, though, and I have a nice memory of having a apple juice and Bagel w/ cream cheese, at a Tim Horton's there.

Frankenmuth is only about 45 min. from our home in Lapeer. As a matter of fact, we purchased our Christmas tree from Bronner's on our way back from northern Michigan, on our honeymoon. We still have and use it (it is made in Canada! :) And we have a purple ornament w/ our names and wedding date on it. We get there every so often--during Christmas time it is utter chaos around there! Quite a place. I lived in F'muth for a few years, before all the chain stores and hotels moved in--it was a bit like living in a storybook. :)
Small world, no? ;)

I guess it's a small world! Definitely get an enhanced driver's license...they're great for people living near the borders and who cross often. And consider that train trip! Btw, there is a Tim Horton's in Frankenmuth now! We felt so at home....my midwestern family is complete German heritage and we stayed at the Bavarian Inn, where they have German last names on all thé doors and those families' histories inside the rooms. My parents have since moved to Iowa, so Frankenmuth is a little bit past halfway there and just a half-hour off our road when we drive. This past year was a year to stay home in Canada for Christmas, so I ordered a red ornament with our names and 20th anniversary inscribed on it. Bronner's even understands French accents and gets our street name and postal code correct on the first try! I guess this Florida thread has turned into a Michigan thread, but in my mind I'm under the Florida sun. Wish it would get up North here more often!

Re: Florida Area

Postby mcarles » Sun Apr 29, 2012 9:50 am

Just found your post. I have lived in Florida most of my life. I started out Near Homestead (way south) in the fifties and have gradually worked my way up through Miami, Pembroke Pines, Palm Coast and now Jacksonville. This is as far north as I want to go!

Jacksonville is lovely. We get enough cool weather in the winter to get into the holiday spirit but stay warm enough for most outdoor activities (grandson plays baseball).

I live in a condo overlooking the St Johns river, so when I knit it's with a beautiful view. I run to the warm side , my own personal heatwaves, so I don't make very many sweaters. Because the weather is warm going on hot most of the time, I usually knit larger projects in the winter. I save the small things for the summer, no lap full of yarn.

I love to read but when knitting I listen to audio books from the library, or something from my husband's collection of old radio programs.
