I made a video of the stitch last night, and will be posting it tonight. That should help for those who have never skipped a chain before.

You will have 31 stitches on each row, because the chains you make between stitches will also count as stitches across the top.

I started last night and did 2 rows. My stitches are so uneven. I know that will get better with practice. The problem I am having now is with holding the yarn. I have knitted most of my life and I hold the yarn in my right hand and loop it over. With crocheting, I have to hold it with my left hand. What is the best way to do that? I can't seem to hold onto it for more than a couple of stitches. And, the tension is all over, too loose, too tight, falling off my fingers. There is probably a simple solution, but it is frustrating. :idonno:

Good question! I think that you should try different ways of holding the yarn until it feels comfortable for you. The tension will get better when you settle into your favorite one. Just be patient for now, and keep working. Your first project will not be as nice as later projects will be. But, you will learn a LOT in the process. And it is SO EASY to unravel crochet. So, if you don't like it at the end, just unravel it, and make it again.

When I hold my yarn, I weave it through the fingers of my left hand: over the index, under the middle and ring fingers, and over the pinkie. When I was younger, I would wrap the yarn around my pinkie, and bring it over my index finger. But, as I've gotten older, that grip was hurting my hand. So, I had to change to weaving it instead.

Good luck finding your perfect yarn hold!

How-To Videos for Crochet Dishcloth

Postby Shandeh » Sat Apr 21, 2012 6:35 pm

Last night, I uploaded some videos for our crochet dishcloth project.

Getting Started: Preparing your materials, how to get the yarn started from the center of the skein, how to make a slip knot, and how to make your first chain stitches for the dishcloth.

1st row in the pattern, which includes single crochet (SC), and missing (skipping) chains. I also talk about how to hold the yarn and the hook as you work.

2nd row in the pattern, which includes single crochet (SC), missing chains, and working in the chain space.

3rd row in the pattern, which includes single crochet (SC), missing chains, and working in the chain space.

How is your dishcloth coming along?

Last night, I worked on mine, while watching "The Trouble with Angels" on my VCR. Gosh, I don't remember ever seeing this movie before! I found it at a thrift store this week for a dollar. Great deal!

Anyway, here's my sunny cloth:

Shandeh! That is a really pretty coloured yarn!
BuckEyedMom, Shandeh is correct. There are lots of different ways to hold the yarn. I hold mine like the person in the videos Shandeh just posted. But I think the first step is just to concentrate on the stitches. I am teaching a friend who has never crocheted before to make a baby blanket. She constantly holds the yarn differently and in whatever way feels comfortable to her. Every now and then she copies my grasp for a few stitches because she wants to crochet like me :cloud9: :crown: . It is absolutely normal to stop and adjust your hold frequently when you are beginning. It is also very normal to have tension differences at first. Keep going! My friend's blanket is looking awesome! I am sure your dishcloth is too! (isn't crochet fun?)

How is your dishcloth coming along?

I just finished working on mine, and decided to make a video to show how to finish the last stitch, and weave in the ends of my yarn.

I hope this helps some of you!

I finished my dishcloth! I used Bernat Handicrafter Twists in the color "Freshly Squeezed".

I would like to start another discussion for learning to crochet, where we make an "Easy" project, instead of a Beginner project. This will teach us more techniques in crochet.

I'm considering these three projects. Which one would you all like to make together?
