awkward, it was really nice seeing the cable take shape. I guess it's like most things in knitting, you just keep practicing the new skill and over time, it becomes easier (and fun!!) My goal is a Saxon braid. . .someday.
I have a Bernat pattern for a cabled hat that does not use a cable needle. What kind of cable needle do you use? My little sample was executed using the type with the v-shaped divot (actually, I made it out of a size 0-ish DPN -- but I think I will probably use the J-shape. I bought some plastic J-shaped ones--I feel more secure with them kind of "trapped" on the J-shape.
Oh, BTW, I think the Bernat Satin would not have lent itself to the rustic look of a fisherman sweater. Just my humble opinion.

You said it right, as you knit cables, it becomes easier and Fun!! Saxon braid is not more difficult than any other cables, I have that kind of braid on the coat I made, I posted a pic on the the forum in the "general knit and crochet" under the name of "warm coat"
As for needle I use, well I guess I developed my own technique with a simple 2 pointed needle (usually same size as the working needles). In order not to loose any stitches, I stick the needle in my work and then knit those stitches from the 2 pointed needle. When too many stitches are involved I just put them back on my working needle. I know it takes longer but who's counting

(I hope I make sense)
And thanks, Your humble opinion is very valuable and I think you are right too, I would not want to start that kind of project and having to rip it off because of the wrong look

Hi Lialab! I treated myself to another look at your Warm Coat--nothing short of spectacular! You set the bar pretty high!
I like the idea of using a DPN as a cable needle--I think I understand about your technique of placing your cable stitches back on working needle. . .like in all fine arts and skills, I believe that whatever technique works best for a person, is the Right technique!
Thanks for words of encouragement about Saxon braid--I have a pattern for a Pillow in saxon braid, which would be a good first attempt at that type of cable, after I get a little more experience! My first project will probably be a cabled handbag--the pattern requires 2 strands of yarn to be used at once, which might make the project a little challenging for me, but hey, if I can dream it, I can do it!

(A side benefit of knitting for me, is more of a can-do attitude!)
