Gauge problem

Postby crochetnut » Thu May 10, 2012 3:55 pm

I have a gauge problem and don't know how to fix it.
The pattern has the following gauge: 16 dc = 4 inches and rows 1-12 = 5 inches

I have the following gauge: 18 dc = 4inches and rows 1-12 = 2.5 inches

How do I fix this problem? Do I go up two hook sizes or one hook size? I think their row gauge is incorrect. I don't see how you can get that gauge in the pattern for rows 1-12.

The pattern is as follows: odd rows chain 3, dc across -45 stitches
even rows: chain 1, skip next stitch *dc in following stitch, slip stitch in next stitch repeat from * across.

Since your gauge is too tight, you will need to go up to a larger hook.
Just try with a hook one size larger, and see if it works. If it doesn't, you will need to try another size larger.
It sometimes helps to try different TYPES of hooks as well. (Metal, Bamboo, Plastic, etc.)

I went up two sizes and get the following gauge: 15dc = 4 inches should be 16dc=4 inches
and for rows 1-12 I get 4 inches and it should be 5 inches.

I don't dare go up another hook because the across gauge is not accurate now, I will just have to stretch the height when I get it done. Which the pattern did say the piece will stretch when finished. So hopefully it will stretch enough. It i supposed to be 14x14 when done. I have the 14 inches across right now but I sure don't have it top to bottom. I have 4 rows to go. I hope it will stretch 2 inches in height.

This is making a pillow, so I have to repeat the directions one more time.

I don't know how to make my stitches taller. I can get gauge going across pretty well, but I never get it top to bottom. How do you make your stitches higher?

I get my stitches higher by pulling the yarn up to the height of the stitches I'm working. This uses more yarn, but makes the stitches lay nicely.

Thank you! I will try that trick and see if it works. I have the first side done. Now to do it again for the second side. This is supposed to be a 14x14 pillow. I may have to cram the pillow into the cover...lol

Ha! My first pillow cover was VERY TIGHTLY CROCHETED!!!
There is no way that a smidgen of dust could ever work it's way into that pillow.
Over time, I learned to relax my grip on the yarn, and my projects are much softer and comfy now.

Here's a photo of the pillow I made, back when I was trying to crochet in my early twenties. It was done all in single crochet. It has held up very well over the years! I still use it. :)

You could post a photo, and leave off the name of the pattern and/or yarn.
