Log Cabin or Lego Land?

Postby BuckeyeMom » Sat May 19, 2012 10:27 am

I am working on a Log Cabin pattern with Bernat Super Value yarn. As I am completing each "log", the blanket is going more out of shape. Each log is longer although I am following the pattern exactly. I was wondering if it is because of working with the yarn and it will shape up when it is washed? :hrmm: Also, there is a border, will it help to make the blanket into a square as it is supposed to be? I want to give this to my grandson because I thought the pattern would look like Legos. I straighten this up but you can probably see how it is going and I have added 2 more "logs" and it is worse.

It is looking very nice, and I do see what you mean, and I do think it will work itself out as you go along, especially after adding a border.
Or maybe you are sewing it together a little wrong, like where the green and red connect to the yellow, it looks to me like you shorted the red and lengthened the green. Ditto on the orange and yellow connecting to the blue. This may work itself in the wash/blocking stage though. I have never made this style of afghan so it isn't like I am an expert in how to sew it together!
And the colours really do remind me of Lego! how awesome is that!! I love the basket weave blue block!

The logs are not sewn together. The stitches are picked up along the side. I am using the correct number of stitches and they are evenly spaced. It seems to be stretching out as I work the rows. The logs are in a broken rib pattern.

I've never tried a Log Cabin before, so I'm no help either.
I'm going to change the title of your post to "Log Cabin - HELP", so that it will get attention from other "log-cabiners".

I have continued on with the "logs". 5 more finished. :hrmm: I think that the problem might be the very beginning square. I will finished it. 5 "logs" to go and then the border. I'm hoping that when it is finished that it will look fine. There is supposed to be a pocket that covers the beginning square so it can be folded into it.

|That looks much better already. Thank you for sharing. I looked at your other picture yesterday and pondered for quite a while but couldn't think of anything helpful to say. But you post helps us to learn. :bravo: Thank you! Please keep us posted :crown: :bravo:

:knit: I am hoping to have the blanket done by June 4th. That is when my grandson will be visiting. I thought about giving it to him for Christmas, but I can't wait that long. I hope he likes it. I will post when it is finished. :idonno: I am unsure about the pocket, but that might make everything look right. I am also thinking about doing a single crochet around it for the border instead of picking up 173 stitches on each side and knitting one row. It seems a better use of my time to do the crochet, if I can figure out how to do it. :hrmm:

:knit: As I am knitting this I am thinking :hrmm: about how to change the pattern so that I don't have the same problem if I ever do this again. I do like the pattern. It is easy to knit and works up quickly. I have been able to do the bigger "logs" at a rate of 1 a day. The beginning square and "logs" took a lot less time. I think I was able to do the first 5 pieces in a couple of days. :knit: I have 3 more to go and I am sure I will be finished by June 4th when my grandson visits. He loves "Legos". I am hoping he thinks it looks like Legos. All that said, I am now going to change the title. It started as "it is all going wonky" to grab attention and because it was. Then, Shandeh changed it to Log Cabin-Help! so knitters who have done this type of blanket could help. Well, no matter what, I am going to finish it as it is and hope that the pocket over the beginning square will straighten things out. So, I am changing the title to Log Cabin (the pattern) or Lego Land (which is going to be for me). I will post the finished project. :D

 Finished just in time. :cloud9: It still is out of shape. I don't know how to fix it. I hope that my grandson will enjoy it anyway. :hrmm: It can be folded and placed into the pocket.

cool!
Have you tried soaking it down, wrapping it in a towel to remove excess water then laying it out and shaping it square?
I love the pocket! That is a cool addition!
