Crochet "On the Lace" Bernat Satin Cardigan CAL

I have decided to join the "on the lace" crochet-a-long. Lialabab's pictures were so beautiful, and I can't wait for more! I should get my yarn in a few weeks. I am going to use Bernat Satin Sparkle sapphire and twilight.
(I have to make two cardigans because I couldn't pick which colour I wanted!)

I guess I am confused about how long the beginning chain should actually be...should it be the measurement given in the drawing or does the border plus the crochet add up to the measurement.

By the way I too am making this sweater for my daughter...she is pretty tiny but it looks really small if I follow the instructions re the small size...I am using Bernat Sating in a bright orange if you can imagine..not my favourite colour but she chose it..LOL

Be careful to make the beginning chain loose, or it will make the bottom of the cardigan too narrow.

Did you make a gauge swatch?

I took the measurements to mean the body of the sweater, NOT including the edging. The garment does not meet at the bottom edge anyway, so precise measurements are not super critical. The only place that it meets is at the top closure. For your reference, I measure between the Med and Large and started out making a large. after about 6-7 shell rows, I could tell that it was going to be too large and baggy, so frogged back to the foundation row and removed the appropriate number of shells to make a medium. I can't help with the small, but based on mine, I would say that it would work for your daughter if she is small.

Lialab had measured the finished back length of hers to be 20" WITH the edging, so even though I am short, I decided to add an extra couple of inches. The shell rows work up to be about an inch in height.

And yes, be sure to make that beginning chain loose. I usually go up one hook size for my beginning chains.

I've chosen "Diamond Satin Sparkle" for my color. I did order 3 extra skeins, so I'm hoping I'll have enough. I'm planning on starting this weekend as I understand the foundation row is the most difficult and I'll have more time for concentrating on it then.

Diamond Sparkle will be lovely! Just work your chain row loosely, and work a few extra chains for "insurance." That way, if you mis-count your skipped chains while working the foundation row, you will have the extras to work with. You can undo whatever is left after you've worked the foundation.

The sizing on this seems to be about right. I bought enough for a large, but making a medium, I will have one full ball and nearly all of a second left.

With some alteration in the sleeve pattern, this could be done up as a short sleeve as well, or someone quite a few pages back was going to make it up sleeveless for a nice summertime cover. I tried mine on after putting the shoulders together, and that would be very cute as well.

One other thing I will mention. Since I am kind of between sizes here, I blocked the body width of my sweater out to fall between the measurements for med and large, and it has worked out well. The key to being able to do that is for the foundation chain to be loose enough to have some stretch. If it's too tight it won't work.

I just started the edging last night, and the way the directions are written, you have to work with it a bit to get the count on the SC's to work out correctly. This is especially true if you have added extra length. I'll figure out what the repeat is for the edging, and let everyonw know.

When measuring for the 10" of the body of the cardigan from the bottom to the start of the armholes, what is the best way to measure that? Gently stretch and lay it flat? Or let it hang somehow?

thanks so much...now I understand..the bottom doesn't meet together ...I was thinking the bottom should be bigger but now I get it...sometimes it takes awhile LOL
