It was called Mallard I guess, it was emerald green and gold and brown. And now I need the Parrot (purple) and can't get that. Any ideas? I'd really appreciate the help. I'm getting lots of calls for my scarves but I need those colors. Yikes!

I think you are referring to Bernat "Boa" yarn. I remember the color Parrot in that yarn.

Bernat Boa is still available on the website: http://www.bernat.com/product.php?LGC=boa&SPP=999

And the color "Parrot" is still there (color #46305).
You can get it from the Bernat Shop at this link: http://shop.bernat.com/default.aspx?Pag ... Code=01000

Bernat Boa

Postby laceyj1204 » Tue May 29, 2012 9:23 pm

I've managed to recently find Bernat Boa at my local Wal-Mart and bought a skein. I've noticed that the Bernat site has a limited amount of patterns using this yarn and was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas to work with using this yarn. I've never tried knitting or crocheting with this kind of yarn and am somewhat at a loss. I'd like to make something for my sister-in-law and could use some inspiration. Thanks so much for any help.

I almost bought giant balls of this last week at the giant ball tent sale but they only had two colours so I saved my money (for now)!
Ideas include,
trim for a shawl sweater, shirt, skirt
fringe on a scarf
girls poncho
Baby blanket
make an amigurumi with it! Imagine how fluffy he would be!
or use it for the tail only, like a squirrel
outline the edges of a pillow
the whole pillow - if I did this I would just make a single crocheted square the size of my pillow form with the yarn. Why waste time doing fancy stitches when the yarn will only hide them all!

My favourite idea is the amigurumi, but I would strongly suggest making it in regular yarn first unless you were familiar with the techniques. And this yarn is so forgiving, if you make a mistake, shhh, just don't ever tell anyone!

I've used it as trim on many items .. there's a gorgeous pattern for collar and cuffs that you can put on a jean jacket to dress it up.

I've used it as trim on a bag that I felted after.

I've made very loosely crocheted ponchos for my nieces when they were little.

Lovely little neck warmers, just use a big needle or hook and keep it all loose.

You can search the free patterns at Bernat and just type in Boa and it will bring up quite a few nice patterns for this yarn.

Good luck!

My new favourite place to look for inspiration for a particular yarn is Ravelery. You can look up Bernat Boa and then click projects and see how other people used the same yarn and most times the pattern they used. I find I see ideas I never would have thought of without them.
In fact I did just that when I bought so many huge balls of the Baby Blanket. I looked up what others made with it and found the ones that inspired me most so I could make it too. Ended up being Bernat's own pattern, but seeing it in different colours can help inspire too than in the designers choice of colours.
If you don't have a ravelery account I suggest making it, it's free and lets you see more. I don't know how I survived before I found ravelery. I love seeing how others used the same yarn or the colours they used for a pattern I want to make.

I think she'd like a shrug. I've found a pattern that's with a different yarn, but I think it could be slightly modified to work with Boa. I'll have to buy another skein to add to the one I've got to make it the proper size. I was just gabberflasted :o that I found it at Wal-mart!!!
