Zhanie, I am so dang jealous! ;)

I'd love to join you. Maybe when I've finished a doily I'm making for my older sister. I'm so much better at crochet than knitting, so this would be a great way to get in some practice.

To all of you who have already finished, I love your small coin purses. They are soooo cute!

Laina :-)

Shandeh wrote:Okay, my friends.... It's time to learn MORE in our knitting adventure. :knit:

We have already learned the knit stitch, and made a simple garter stitch dishcloth in the Learn to Knit discussion.

Now, we are going to learn a few more things, so we can make a cute little Coin Purse!

This will be a smaller project than our dishcloth, and will have lots of interesting things going on.
You will need one skein of worsted weight yarn in a light or bright color.
I would recommend the following Bernat yarns: Satin, Super Value, Waverly, Satin Sparkle, or the new Giggles

It will be best to make your coin purse with a solid light-colored yarn, to make it easier to see and work your stitches. Stitches created with dark yarns are sometimes very difficult to see as you work. Don't worry...later on, after you are more comfortable with knitting, you can use all the dark yarn you want. :)

You will also need two locking or split-ring stitch markers or safety pins. Closed circle markers will not work, because we need the markers to stay on the stitches, as we move to the next row.

You'll find split-ring or locking stitch markers in the Bernat Shop.

Make sure you have a yarn needle to use for sewing the seams on your coin purse.
The Chibi Tapestry Needle set is awesome! It is a little plastic tube, containing two different sized yarn needles. I have two sets of these - one goes in my yarn bag, and the other stays by my knitting chair. I just love having my yarn needles in a little tube like that!

When you finish your project, you will need two buttons. I would recommend waiting until you completely finish the project before buying your buttons. Your knitting gauge and yarn will determine the size of your buttonholes, and you will want to be sure the buttons are not too small or too big to go through the holes. I will make a video about that later on.

We will be learning the Purl Stitch with this project.
Here is Crystal's video on making the Purl Stitch: The Purl Stitch by Bernat

Our coin purse is created with a Seed Stitch fabric, which is made by switching back and forth from a knit to a purl stitch over and over again. It will feel tedious at first...but after you get the hang of it, it will flow better. Be sure to take the yarn to the BACK before working a knit stitch, then bring it to the FRONT when working a purl stitch.
I will make a Seed Stitch video and post it here soon.

We will be working a simple decrease in our project.
K2together - (knit two together) - usually abbreviated "K2tog"
Here's the video: Bernat's K2tog Video

We will also be making a basic increase as well.
YO - (yarn over) The YO will create the buttonholes in our coin purse.
Here's the video: Bernat's YO Video

By the way, there is a little mistake in the Bernat pattern. In the "Abbreviations", it mentions that we are making a SSK in the pattern, but it will actually not be used at all. Just ignore that. ;)

Who's ready to make a coin purse? :D

8-) I enjoyed making this Pocket Pouch, instead of the Coin Purse. ;)
