My husband can crochet and he prefers using a large double ended hook he made himself from a 1", 1.5" and some other size round dowels to make afghans that are a different colour on each side. They are so cool looking! I cannot figure out how he does it either! He says his parents taught him it to when he was a child, but they cannot remember ever doing it themselves. I have never even seen anything online about it either!
I am so sorry your brother gave up. When my husband retired he got bored sitting around the house. I taught him how to crochet and he made afghans for the whole family. There was nothing GAY about him. He was a very secure MALE male. He never felt threatened by anything that may have been even slightly feminine. Try to encourage your brother to continue. There was a football playermany years ago who did needlepoint and I doubt anyone questioned him.
