Postby NessaKnit » Thu Jun 28, 2012 6:30 pm

Hello,

I'm working on a baby blanket which I am making with square swatches of knitting and I am wondering, what is the best way to join the peices together when im done knitting my squares?

Thanks!

Here is an awesome seaming video by Crystal from Bernat. :)

Also, you will find other people discussing their seaming advice in these discussions:

Good luck with your seaming!

Thank you so much Shandeh! :notworthy:

I'm just wondering if there is a way that you can join different colors without the seams showing?
Also, what is the purpose for blocking? Is it always required?

For an invisible seam, you can do the mattress stitch, but it will only be invisible on the front (right side). This will create a bulky seam on the back. For example, if you look inside a commercially produced sweater, you will find bulky seams like I'm talking about.

For blankets, it's best to do a whipstitch seam (or something similar), because it looks the same on both sides. I usually use the same seaming yarn throughout the entire blanket, and it becomes a design element. Another option is to just choose one of the two colors you are seaming together, and the seam will blend in with it's matching section.

As for blocking, that is a matter of preference. It really does make a blanket look more professional and finished, though.

Hi Shandeh, I was just wondering what your opinion is on using the stitch used in the video you posted for me?

Thanks!

That's a great seam for blankets. It's sometimes called "whipstitch" and is the most commonly used method for seaming blankets. I use it all the time.

My all time favourite way to join any knitting or crochet together is the ladder stitch.
It is almost completely invisible from both sides, it makes your work as flexible as it was before you joined and you can join different colours together and unless you look real close, you cannot see the difference. It takes a little time to get used to working the stitch, but I really believe the results are well worth it. There are a few different tutorials on-line. Try typing in 'ladder stitch knit join to your favourite search engine and find them.
Here are a couple to get you started:
http://fluffandfuzzknitting.wordpress.com/2011/11/07/how-to-sew-seams-in-knitting-using-mattress-or-ladder-stitch/
http://doyoumindifiknit.typepad.com/do_you_mind_if_i_knit/2010/02/joining-up-with-an-invisible-stitch.html/
It took me a while to get used to working the join stitch and every so often I start doing the mattress join instead, then I look back at my work and see my oops moment.

Have fun with it!
