A beginner's question regarding Patchwork Blanket

Hi,
I'm a beginner to crochet, and I have a question regarding the Patchwork Blanket pattern (http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=6375)
The first row says "With A, ch 16. *With B, ch 17. With A, ch 17. Rep from * twice more. With A, ch 2. 120 ch total."

How exactly do I join the new colors when I only have loops at this stage?
Even if you can direct me to a tutorial teaching this, I'll be grateful.

It seems like you start with the new color by just pulling a loop of it through the current loop to make the next chain. Here's a tutorial with some pictures
