Spiral Hat pattern

I tried the "Spiral Hat" pattern this weekend. Everything was fine until I got to the "Decorative Top Stitch" which starts "With RS of Hat facing". The pattern didn't specify RS so I would assume you are working from the RS all through the pattern.
Now you join with sl st around post of first sc. Then next 3 sc, then sc around post of next 4 hdc. Since the last round of the hat ended with 4 hdc and 3 sc the above requires one more sc than is in the row. The other problem is this requires you to be working back in the opposite direction of the spiral. So either the spiral isn't worked on the RS or you turn your hat around and work upside down on the last spiral row.
Either way you do that there's still a problem in the "Last rnd" of the this section. It ends with sc in the 4 hdc and then sc in the 3 sc, but the sc come first in the row and then the hdc!!??
Also the top stitch section seems to be one round, so why is it written as 1st rnd, 2nd rnd, last rnd?

I got an answer. I was totally misreading the decorative top stitch section as a bottom edge thing. Instead it starts at the beginning (top tip) of the hat and runs all the way through all the rounds in the spiral. Makes sense now.
