4 ply usually means medium, or worsted weight yarn.
Since it's an afghan, and you're wanting to order from Bernat, I would recommend using Bernat Waverly, Bernat Super Value, or Bernat Worsted.
Bernat Waverly comes in 3.5 ounce skeins
Bernat Super Value comes in 7 ounce skeins for solid colors, and 5 ounce skeins for ombres
Bernat Worsted comes in 14 ounce solids, and 10.6 ounce ombres
Since you aren't sure about the yardage, I would recommend ordering extra yarn.
I am thinking about doing a christmas afghan from a magazine that was issued in 1996. (maybe things were discribed differently back then) At any rate.... I usually look at the yardage in the instructions to determine how many skeins of each color I might need or better yet... the pattern tells me 4 skeins of white etc. I am not sure about this pattern. It calls for 13 oz. of white, 12 oz of navy and so on. How do I determine this? If I am looking at a yarn that is 3.5 oz do I just divide into the 13? (4 skeins) If the yarn is 5 oz... again do I just divide into the 13 oz? ( 3 skeins). I thought the "oz." was just the weight of the yarn..(thicker yarns would be heavier but not necessarily more yardage. I just don't want to order a yarn from Bernat and then not have enough or worse too much. Any input would be appreciated.
