Help with Baby Cardigan Sweater

I am making a baby cardigan sweater from a pattern I found on the web and I am at the point of adding the ribbing on each side of the front. I'm basically looking for some opinions regarding which side of the sweater I should place the buttons, as I don't know whether my new grandchild will be a boy or a girl. The pattern is broken out with instructions for both regarding which side should have the button holes; but I'm not sure which way would be correct to make it gender neutral. Any guidance from the experts on this forum would be greatly appreciated!

Congradulations for the new grandchild. Will he or she be the first one in the family???
Personnally I don't give too much thought about what side to put the buttons or button holes . I'm just thinking which way is easier for the parent to button the sweater. but this is my own 2 cents.

Yes, this is the first grandchild in the family. I was thinking along the same lines as you, making it easier for the parent. Thanks for your input.

No problem!!! as for being grandparents whatever story you might have heard about grannies is "Absolutely TRUE" we definitely go crazy with pictures and gifts and.......
