I love your hats! Such great work! :bravo:

New! Charity Project - Red Scarves for Orphans

Postby Shandeh » Sat Sep 29, 2012 4:19 am

I've made a scarf for the Red Scarf Project in the past, and it was very satisfying to know that the scarf I made would be appreciated by an orphan who is aging out of foster care. Some of these orphans say that this is the very first handmade item they have ever received!

Vickie Howell shared a wonderful story about the project in the Bernat Blog recently.
Check it out! RED SCARF PROJECT

If you would like to knit or crochet a red scarf for the project, read here for the guidelines:

RED SCARF PROJECT GUIDELINES

Size: approximately 60” long and 5” to 8” wide. Scarves should be long enough to be wrapped around the neck, with tails long enough to be tied in the front.

Style: Think unisex collegiate. Fringes are optional. Your scarf should drape, tie easily and be soft.

Color: Red! However, this could mean burgundy, cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors, or multicolor hues including red.

Finished & tagged: Yarn ends should be securely sewn in. For a personal touch, attach a tag saying “Handmade for You” with your first name, city, and group affiliation, if any. Donors have also included washing instructions, messages of encouragement, gift cards, and more.

Mail to:
Foster Care to Success, Red Scarf Project
21351 Gentry Drive Suite 130
Sterling, VA 20166

NOTE: Scarves are accepted between September 1 and December 15 annually. As we have limited storage space, please send your scarves only during this time period.

Knit/Crochet for Breast Cancer

Postby Shandeh » Wed Oct 03, 2012 2:06 am

Bernat truly has a heart for charity, with annual donations to help fight breast cancer in the US and Canada.
Right now, you can purchase Bernat's Breast Cancer Collection yarns for $3.99 a skein (until November 30th, 2012).

So far this year, Bernat has contributed $30,000 USD to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and a minimum of $5,625 CDN to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in connection with these products.

Have you purchased any of these yarns for your own knit/crochet projects? Share your stories here.

Tonight, I spent some time figuring out how I want to make my Red Scarf Project scarf this year.
I think I'm going to use some vintage Bernat Nylo Germantown I have in my stash.

It's washable worsted weight, so it should work well. I found a Bernat pattern that should work well with that yarn - The Red Friday Scarf (crochet)

Hi Shandeh - Is that a 60-cent sticker I see on your yarn stash??? I thought the donated yarn I received recently was cheap with a 99-cent sticker on it; but this one has got me beat.

I crochet several prayer shawls a year for our local hospital's auxiliary group.

Yeah! That yarn was recently given to me, from a deceased church member's stash. It actually belonged to HER mother-in-law, so I have no idea how old it is.

It's very soft, and knits and crochets very well. Wish they still made this yarn!

Here's how my crochet scarf is shaping up. I'm making mine more narrow than the original. I think I started with a chain of 24 stitches instead of 34.

Thank you! I ended up missing the deadline, though. :tears:
So, I am just gonna hold onto the scarf until I find another use for it.
