Softee Baby Double Diamond Baby Blanket questions

I need some help. I'm a definite beginner! I really want to make this baby blanket for a very good friend of mine who's expecting a baby girl in February. I've only ever made scarves before and I've only followed a pattern one other time.... I'm really nervous about this but it's something I'd really like to do.

Ok, so I think I might be able to slowly stumble through the pattern but I'm super confused by how to join the squares. The instructions don't say anything about it (and I really think they should since it's a beginner pattern). Also, I'm guessing that I'm supposed to use the yarn to join them but which color should I be using?

I just really want to do a good job on this! Thanks!
