Roving yarn unralveling and pulling apart.

Postby Kim33 » Sun Oct 28, 2012 3:38 pm

Hello,
Ive started a scarf with the Roving yarn, and its coming along nicely, (I'm fairly new to knitting) but the wool I'm using keeps unraveling and pulling apart. Ive had to tie it together again 3 separate times and its making me want to throw the whole project, wool and all, out.
Am I doing something wrong with this type of wool? I've only really used the handicraft wool before to make dish towels and thought I might be ready for something more advanced. I'm left handed, I don't know if this makes any difference in the way I hold the yarn?
Any help or advice would really be appreciated, I don't really want to throw it all out.
Thank you
~Kim

Being a left handed knitter should not affect it, (I am also). The problem occurs because roving has very little to it or no twist to help hold the fibers together. One solution may be not to pull your yarn too tightly while knitting with it. Or you might try doubling it along with a strand of another yarn that has some twist to it.you would likely need less stitches and a larger size pair of needles for this. Others on this forum may have some other ideas to help solve your problem.

Hi Kim,

Bernat Roving is a single ply yarn, with hardly any twist at all. This makes a fluffy yarn, which needs to flow through your fingers as you are working with it. Tight knitting could make it more difficult to work with. So, relax your grip on the yarn, and knit it gently. The knitted fabric will be strong and cushy.
