what does it mean to "place marker on last stitch"

You can use a safety pin if you want....or tie on a piece of different colored yarn.
You just need to place a locking stitch marker on the last loop on your knitting needle, or the last stitch worked by your crochet hook.

The marker will stay in place while you continue working from that point. You will use the marker as a guide for measuring.
