Afghan Patterns for Bernat Softee Chunky Twists Yarn

Postby NikRussRN » Sun Apr 22, 2012 2:43 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions for free afghan patterns using this yarn? The only one that I seem to find on the Bernat website is the Basketweave, and I just feel like that texture is too much for a yarn that is so "Busy".

Suggestions much appreciated. Thanks!

Older Version Softee Chunky yarn

Postby Jansafire » Tue Sep 11, 2012 11:16 am

A little bit of a bummer for sure, I am a designer and all my patterns these last couple of years I have been using softee chunky bernat yarn. Now with this new one - I will have to re-figure out and re-write EVERYTHING - by the way this new yarn is definitely not a 5, it should be marked as a 6 ;( I always loved the colors in this yarn.
Has anyone have any suggestions for a 100% Acrylic yarn, weight 5, to substituted the older softee chunky yarn. HELP !!!

You are right, this is a bummer. Last winter I bought Softee chunky Yarn and the yardage was 150m for a 100 gm ball, Bought some more in Sept the yardage was 164 m . The yarn was lighter in weight. The "new Softee Chunky" is around 109m. but now is heavier weight. How can you figure out how much yarn to buy. They should have left the yarn as it was, as it was perfect the way it was. They should have named the "new" yarn something else. You can buy Patons Shetland Chunky. OR to knit a sweater in the heavier weight, test your tension and knit a smaller size but keep the orginal sleeve and body lengths. Another possibity is used double light weight worsted yarn. Check you tensions. Dorothy

Can someone tell me about the change of yarn with the same name.
I found this fantastic indoor booties pattern online (Softee Chunky - Slipper Boots) Was so happy because I bought tons of that yarn to :knit: knit slippers for the kids. Well......not so fast. It is the same name but a different yarn... :ire: Where are the patterns for the old Softy Chunky # 5 ? I remember seing some long time ago, they were taken out.
Why using the same name ? I was a bit angry :ire: about that. Now I need patterns for my yarn that is a 5.

The older version of Softee Chunky was discontinued, so the patterns are no longer available on the Bernat website. You might be able to find them at other websites, though. I sometimes come across discontinued Bernat patterns on Michaels or JoAnns webpages.

I have been successful in emailing Bernat customer service and asking for help locating a discontinued pattern. Usually with the name of the pattern or a good description, or with a picture of it, they have been able to locate what I need and email it to me.

Now if we could just lobby them for an area on their site where they maintain those patterns.....hummmm. As I told the lady who was helping me a while back, lots of us have the discontinued yarn in our stashes, and even if we don't,it's not that hard to make a substitution, either needle size or different yarn! Seems that it would be a valuable resource for Bernat to maintain, and would promote customer loyalty! Just my 2 cents!

Sometimes that info is on Ravelry as well.
