problem with afghan

I am working on an afghan that is called fans & cables. It says P1, work increase. In the directions, it says that the increase is purl in the front and back of the stitch. When I work the increase in the back of the existing P1, it throws off the pattern. If I add a purl stitch and work the front & back, the pattern doesn't work out either. Can someone help me, please?
