Welcome and FAQ

During our current KAL/CAL, you'll be working on a scarf a little bit every day for the whole year. At the end, look back and see how the weather has changed!

I love this project, and can't wait to see what everyone makes! The pattern leaves lots of room for interpretation and creativity!

1. How will the millions of ends be dealt with? I hate ends!

2. If using worsted weight yarn, and say we added the monthly borders and knit/crocheted out 2 rows a day, anyone have an estimate of how long it would end up being? I realize it would only be an estimate since everyone crochet/knits at different tensions. I am thinking fingering/baby yarn might be better to get a nicer overall length? (at least for me).

Weather Underground has historical data - you can search for the temperature on a specific date in the past.

For more general historical data, Wikipedia might be your best bet.

Here's the Canadian National Climate Data and Information Archive's website, for Canada-specific data

I'm going to do both the CAL/KAL scarf using the average temps from last year for my area...using this as a celebration of my 25th wedding anniversary year. Going back and checking when we had snow in certain months...such as last October we had a blizzard and lost power for about 3 days...so I'm adding Satin Snow White for that section of my scarf...I'm figuring this is what was meant by being creative and using different variations. How many weeks will this CAL/KAL go?

Hi doo18! I like your idea about using your scarf to highlight your anniversary year. Cool!

You asked how long the KAL/CAL will last. It will last as long as we
want it to. I, for one, want to see how everyone's scarf will look as the year progresses.

My personal scarf/wrap will be made with Bernat Denimstyle yarn - all 13 colors of it! I will need all those colors, because we have such a range of temperatures in my area. (Charlotte, NC). I am also going to add sections in white, black, or gray - to show when we get snow, lightning, or rainy days. :) You probably noticed that I said scarf/wrap. I want mine to be a wrap, to keep me warm, so I will add more stitches at the cast on. I have enough scarves.

Bernat Denimstyle will be perfect for a weather scarf, because it looks cloudy! :D

Hi karenarp! You could just leave the ends until you finish the scarf, then use them as a fringe on the sides if you want. Or you could jazz them up even more with beads. Be creative, so you will enjoy your project. I think that fingering or baby yarn would work nicely, to keep your scarf a manageable length. I was considering this myself, when I first heard about the project - I was thinking of using Bernat Crochet Thread (the new, soft version).

What a fun project, I just don't know yet what I'll be doing, scarf or wrap or a throw. I too was thinking about baby yarn, I think the end result will be softer and little bit shorter. Anyway, it will be a nice memorabilia to pass on!!

I crochet, and usually I can just stitch over the ends as I go - so that's my plan. I could only get a few colors at JoAnn's and have had to order the rest, so I've only had one color change so far, but I think it looks fine. I just had to be careful when I did the stitches into the ch1 spaces that I also went under the tails I was trying to hide.

And so far, my four row border and one day of color puts me at right about an inch. This puts my scarf at about 10.5 ft. That's using Bernat Satin and the H hook. That's pretty long. It might end up being a Doctor Who scarf after all! LOL

EDITED because I just reread the pattern on the blog and it says to put four rows between months rather than two. That gets me now to 10.9 ft! ... I'm thinking two rows between months will suffice!
