Yarn and Colors for Your Temperature Scarf!

During our current KAL/CAL, you'll be working on a scarf a little bit every day for the whole year. At the end, look back and see how the weather has changed!

I know we're supposed to use Bernat yarn, but they never seem to have the colors I want. I'm "a fall" so I like rich jewel tones to go with my skin tone. This is Swish. I love living in an area where we experience all the seasons!

I'm using Silk, which is an every so barely off white. It's lovely. :)

Thanks Shandeh, great idea! I missed that yarn when browsing the Bernat site - probably because I wasn't looking for that yarn weight, but it will work really nicely for my plans and I can just double it. Yay, can't wait to do this! :knit:

I will love to see your scarf take shape! I really love that new yarn, and have been wanting to try it in a project. My local craft store has several colors of it on display, tempting me.

I tried to match colors from a weather map, so I went with 13 colors and black for my borders. I was surprised to see that already January has used 5 different colors! I'm going to knit with a fingering weight yarn to make sure it isn't too long.

(we don't usually get temps in my very extreme ranges, but every now and then...)

below -15: royal purple
-15 to -1: lavender
0 - 9: bright blue
10 - 19: med blue
20 - 29: light blue
30 - 39: aqua
40 - 49: lime green
50 - 59: yellow
60 - 69: yellow orange
70 - 79: orange
80 - 89: red orange
90 - 99: red
above 100: bright salmon/pink

I am having trouble deciding on yarn colors....however, I know that I want to use white or ivory as the border and that I some how want to reflect the actual weather in addition to the temperature...so I was thinking maybe adding some beading? Thoughts on the beading aspect?

Since I am in Northern California, the weather can vary from rain, fog, wind, clouds and of course sun. I was thinking something along the lines of no beads for the sunny days (which will be most of the scarf) and then different color beads for the other elements.

I appreciate your input!

I could see different shades of grey beads working well for rain, fog, and wind, and maybe white beads for clouds?

I LOVE THAT!!! and I think I have decided on the colors. I asked my best friend what her 2nd fave color is (other then black) and she said red/merlot (which I should have known because that was the color of our dresses for her wedding!) So I am going with a fingering weight yarn from dark merlot to a light blush.... The grey beads will go awesome with that!! I am so excited...I can't wait to start this!!

I have been wondering about the border colors myself. The pattern calls for doing 4 rows of the border color to start and end the scarf and then I think it's 4 rows to separate the months. Since I am doing 4 'seasonal' afghans I want each one of my afghans to have a different border, something that goes along with the season and possibly of a 'heather' hue. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
